Probably what it cost them to restore it. Restoring a B for profit is impossible. Most people here I'm sure put way too much money into the cars for what they are worth.

Me included.

$27500 and light rust on chrome

Anytime you hear, "I'm helping the owner" is a line of BS.

Well - the upside is, if some fool decides to purchase it a full price, it'll bring up the value of ours, eh? Yep.

Hey, I will gladly give my time if anyone would me to go look at it for them and check it out, all you have to do is pay my expenses!!!

I would have serious doubts about paying $27K for a rust free B! Wow!!

There was the 70-1/2 and the 74-1/2 but a 72-1/2?

Nov 16, 2009 18:55:53
ClayJ

Maybe it is a 70-1/2. Note, no console and a pillow dash. but no split-bumper.

Owner may have well spent the $27k for a full service restoration.

How many kilos is $27,500 these days?

Nov 16, 2009 19:16:38
74.5 MGB

Unbelieveable $27,500 and definitely not concours. Pictures are small but looks like:
Wrong Dash
Wrong color valve cover
Incorrect steering wheel
Incorrect chrome wheels
Incorrect door sills
Bonnet and Boot hinges incorrect color
Bonnet pin guide cup wrong color
Bonnet secondary catch wrong color
Completely wrong grille for 1972
No bonnet insulation
I believe the 1972 had a console and armrest

Car should be correct for this asking price - seller is dreaming but if he does get his price MGB's are now profitable cars and I am going to produce cars just like this for 12,000.00 and sell them for 18,000.00.

think they will take food stamps in trade?

We had a thread a couple of weeks back about why MGBs are not worth any money. We should be happy the guy is trying to get that price...not going out of our way to dump all over him. Sure...the car isn't perfect...but neither are many Healeys that sell for 50k.

If you think your car is better.........then start thinking yours is worth 30k.

I say: encourage the highest prices possible.

Given the incredible run up in classic cars over the past 20 years, its only a matter of time that us "B" owners start to see some of this appreciation...

The values have no where to go but up.

The top-top-top restored/rebuilt MGBs do get the $ (and are a freaking steal if done right), but no doubt the seller of these cars isn't making a killing. If he breaks even, he would be doing well.

I don't think the CL car in the OP is a top shelf restoration. No doubt it is very good, but could be done better no doubt.

Lets see, car weighs in at about 2500 lbs or 1136 kilos, $27500 ÷ 1136 = $24.20/kilo. OH -- that's not what you were talking about :)

The price is high for this car. But, if I hadn't had the sentimental attachment to my car (which I've had since I was 16) then $27K would have been a deal for a concours grade MGB. I must have spent close to that on my car and had to put in *many* hours of time to get it there.

How much of the $27,500 is for shipping the car back to the mainland?

If anyone wants to have the car inspected I'll volunteer - Just pay for a round trip flight and two weeks in a beackfront hotel ... It'll take me at least two weeks to do a decent inspection. :D

NOHOME

I am going to bet that none of you have lived on an island before? Things are going to be more expensive than on the mainland. I bet the supply of MGs in Hawai is not what it would be in say, California?

Rust free cars on an island are rare. That fresh ocean breeze has its side effects. Cheap repro chrome from China will not stand a chance!

I hate to rehash what may be the most hashed thread I have started, but why do we not just observe and see what happens? Why do we feel obliged to say that NO MGB is worth that kind of money. I really hope that someone with the funds looks at it, says "I always wanted an MGB but will never have the talent to build my own, and certainly could not do it for that kind of money" and buys the thing. Score one for the MG brotherhood!

Even if he could have had one restored for him at the price, he saves a TON of headaches and time; in my experience dealing with a restorer is only marginally easier than doing it yourself, as many here have found out! THAT has to have some value no?

Would anyone on this board buy it at that price? NO. But it only takes that one buyer with $$$ and desire, and I would not say that he was "Ripped-off".

Pete

I just hope he gets the price.

Nov 17, 2009 09:04:04

there is one on e-bay right now for $29,900.00

I'm definitely with Peter on this. A basic Miata is about $30K - why would a fully restored MGB be any less?

I would call $27,500 Barrett-Jackson thinking. More power to him.
