The boys and I have been pretty busy with Scouts as of late and having a great time enjoying lots of camping, hiking, kayaking etc. We recently decided to try and hike the Adironack 46 or ADK46. They are the 46 mountains in the Adirondacks that are over 4000' tall. (or at least to the original 1925 survey!) There is a club dedicated to climbing the "High Peaks". We did our first two peaks recently, Cascade and Porter Mountains. It was a total of 8 miles up pretty steep, muddy and rugged terrain. Oh yeah, being November there was a good deal of ice and snow at the top too! I'm not sure if we'll get any more peaks in this year as the days are growing really short and the snow will be flying soon. But here are a few photos. The first is on top of Cascade with Whiteface Mountain in the background. Whiteface was the mountain where the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics skiing events were held. Lake Placid is very close by. The second photo is looking back on Cascade from Porter Mountain. Fun stuff! And oh yeah, my legs were killing me for about three days afterwards! lol

I guess the dogs drank from the tanks you all are standing near. I don't know if they call those water holes on top of the rocks tanks where you live but that's what they are called out West. Looks like fun for you, not me. I'm no kind of climber, never have been, but I enjoy pictures of climbing. :)
John,
Nice shots. The boys are really getting tall. I can't imagine where that comes from.
Glad you are doing things like that with your sons. They grow up much to fast and
then it's too late for fun things and trips like that. But there will always be the oportunity
of going to MG events and them driving one of your cars. Been there and done that a
loooong time ago with my sons. I'll never forget the look on my youngest sons face when
I told him we were going to New Hasmpshire and he was going to drive one of the MG's.
"You mean I am going to drive the TD!!!!!". He did and we had a great time.
George
John,
Yep, the dogs definitely drank that water... and enjoyed a few bites of the PB&J we had for lunch.
George,
Yeah, I haven't had too much time lately for LBC's. But that's OK! I'm really enjoying this time with the boys, they are at a great 'golden age' where they are having a great time with Dad. That certainly doesn't last forever. And I'm having alot of fun too!
Looks like a great time, John!
I love high elevation packing. We don't go so much these days, but I love to be at or above the timberline, which is about 6000' around here and usually confined to a few months in the Summer due to the snow pack.
Your photos remind me of some areas in the Oregon Coast range!
Cool John. I remember how stunning those mountains are from our recent vacation. I climbed one of the low ridges of the South Mountain in Phoenix last Saturday to test out my right knee following surgery last April. The knee did fine...but the lungs complained loudly. Getting old I suppose.
Rod,
I'm not sure exactly where the timber line is up here, but most of the Adirondack high peaks are barren on top. Pretty cool.... and cold! The day we hiked it was 50 degrees at the base, but up top it was below 30 and the wind was whipping pretty good. Also, the trees had dropped their leaves, so while hiking in the sun it was nice and warm, but higher up there were more evergreens and the trails were much narrower and packed with snow and ice.... and chilly!
Jay,
Most of the High Peaks are nestled around the Lake Placid region in the Adirondacks. It is a very beautiful area. I'm definitely looking forward to more hiking and camping next summer.
Whiteface was the first SCCA speed event I worked back in '64. The Mohawk-Hudson Region had a hill climb there. I drove up from Troy in a Fiat 600. Had to use reverse to get up some of the hills. Had a good "dice" with a 2CV along the Northway for awhile to see who could go faster. A draw as we kept drafting and passing each other.
Spectacular view and nice looking young men...
Thanks for shareing. Were it not for you John and I would miss out on all those views...:eyepop:
John, that looks like a fantastic time! Wish I lived alot closer to the Adirondacks than I do...
