gotta give the underprivlaged a break thats why --- why ? My mom was dirt poor , she didn't get any breaks , the guy in the Will Smith movie didn't get any breaks , Clarence Thomas , Cindy McCains dad didn't get any breaks , oprah , Sam Walton , the list goes on and on . A person makes their own breaks , sit back and say poor me , odds are you are gonna be saying that for a long time , get up and do something about it , things will turn for the better . Letting people in , black , white or whatever , without having to go by the rules doesn't give them an advantage , it tells them hand outs are available , don't work for anything .

Affirmative Action, it's good for some people. The only think I can think of is that in 20 years when I'm a member of the minority maybe affirmative action can help me out in some way.

On a side note, if this is (or was) common practice, perhaps theirs a reason Barack Obama refuses to release his college transcripts.

Oct 09, 2008 19:01:27

The downside is admitting someone who has not reached the required entry standards is really not helping in the long run.

The institution concerned has their reputation go down or the student is failed later when the institution brings in their own standards.

Either way the end result is the same.

Cheers , Pete.

My understanding of affirmative action is that it is meant to offset perceived institutionalised racism in the applications process or face-to-face meetings.

Where acceptance into a college is based on merit alone, such as reaching certain grades, I cannot understand how affirmative action has any place at all whatsoever.

The article is fairly poor. It's scant on details - it paraphrases the guy - and the report it mentions (no link to it) is disputed. Doesn't leave much to go on.

That's the law school I graduated from and Dean Wilborn was my favorite professor. Maybe because he's the only one that would give me a decent grade. He's a really truly decent person. If he says there are problems with their stats he's not just trying to pull a fast one. It's no secret Nebraska isn't the most diverse place in the world. One of my best friends in law school was a minority that probably wouldn't have been admitted if race wasn't factored in. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

As most know you take your "l-cats"to get into law school,by the time you get into law school college is over and if you want to get in you better have a very high gpa. When college grads are equal and l cat scores are tied i can see taking a percentage of minorites and this should also include woman. What i disagree with is lowering the admintance requirements for minorities, when it comes to law or medicine by this point in a students life its a mistake

Again Steve, with the soft racism of lower expectations for people who don't look like you. I suppose in your mind it stretches credibility that blacks can compete on a level field academically with whites. Your paternalistic concern is so very liberal. Are you also judging Senator Obama's qualifications on the basis of his race, and giving him affirmative action-like credit for being "well spoken?"

My God...what will this country come to when people who think exactly like you do take charge of all three branches of government?

A lot of schools are looking for a diverse student body, and race is only one factor when defining diverse. Back in the old days only people of a certain race and class were admitted to top schools. When they went to an almost 100% merit based system where only the brightest kids were accepted, they found they had a problem. One problem was that all of the kids for some majors had almost all the same background. This limited their exposure to new ideas from their piers. Another problem was that if you took 100 kids who had gotten straight A's all of their lives and graded them on a fair scale A-F, a small percentage of them would kill themselves. So it was decided that for very selective programs that about half of the kids would be the very smartest who applied, a few would be legacys, and a few kids would be those with unique backgrounds that would create a diverse background. These kids would be smart enough to get through the program, but would be happy with a few B's and C's because they were just happy to be there. Obviously highly technical programs in science and engineering are often the exception to this. Likewise, young white men today have a much easier time getting into certain programs than they did 20 years ago. Lots of our best schools have too many women in many programs. For example, a young white man from a rural zip code who wants to study English literature has a good chance of getting into some fairly good schools slightly beyond his academic qualifications. If you want your haole kids to be defined as diverse, send them to India to study meditation for a year. This will get them into some better schools when they return as they will then have a unique background.

Jay,

I don't believe in a quote system for advanced degrees... only the best and the brightest need apply.

But don't even begin to try and tell me that Erics concerns were anything other than letting the darkies in.

We both know from reading his posts... exactly what and how he thinks!

Save your breath and go find a murderer with dried blood on his hands to defend.

As many darkies can get in as whiteys , AS LONG AS THEY MAKE THE GRADES .

Once again , racism comes form the dems on here . I didn't put it up here for a race issue , like the dems say , I did it to show how the universities are "dumbing" down the education system. It says minorities , black don't have the market cornered on the minority label.

A law suit is kinda dumb. I bet if she had gone to say Oakland Community Collage for a year, gotten some hard classes done with good grades, then applied again, she could have transferred to U of M and gotten in that way.

With hard work you can move up the chain to better schools. Heck, I am no genius and I went to university for free.

Eric, you're worried about "dumbing" down the educational system, that's great. But where you're completely wrong is assuming that gpa's and lsat scores have a thing to do with who's dumb and who's smart. These "grades" measure a skill, not intelligence. All of the law schools I applied to admitted their class using ONLY gpa, lsat and apparently race/gender. I've always been amazed that they didn't actually want to meet any of us to determine if we could actually look someone in the eye and form a complete sentence. The best asset for success wasn't intelligence, it was a robotic ability to study for hours upon hours and regurgitate the material in the form the professor desired. This discussion is ONLY about admissions, I completely disagree that the intelligence of the class suffered by admitting a 3.5 gpa minority over a 4.0 white.

My comment is about the "young lady" who sued U of M over her denied acceptance, not your daughter. In this case, I do not believe in using the courts for such a trivial matter.

Maybe to you, to me minorities means what it says, being in the minority. And you can warp the definition to mean what you think, that doesn't mean others think like you.
