Well after a long 3 day weekend, the 68 finally fired up!. Idles kinda high and rough and is getting HOT.. But it runs. Thanks to Jeff and Jimmy for the dizzy and carb. Now to figure out if it is really hot or just saying hot.

Off to buy a timing light!

Thanks everyone for all the help..

There are infrared thermometers that give you a temp at various spots on the cooling system. Beg, borrow, steal or even buy one.

From my experience, the gauge isn't very reliable - mine isn't, at least. Flush your system well. Check your coolant level & radiator fins for obstructions (bugs where I live) regularly, and maybe add Redline "Water Wetter."

My craftsman Multi-meter has IR therm built in.. ALL cooling system parts are new except the radiator. The Radiator was used 3 months on my last b. The gauge might be off since i can touch the hoses when the gauge shows hot and not loose any skin... We will see.

That tells me you're probably OK. Do all that other stuff I mentioned, if you haven't already. All my cooling system stuff is original 1972 except for the (several) water pump.
Keep in touch.

Check the voltage stabilizer to the gauge. If it's not screwed to the firewall, it's not grounded, and not stabilizing any voltage. This will make the temp gauge (and the fuel gauge) read high.

(Assuming your '68 is like my '74...)

Definitely don't rule out the possibility of a gauge that lies. Mine goes to hot every time I start her up.
