My 71 GT came with Ramflo airfilters that the PO had installed. The foam looked kinda tired so I washed 'em good in soapy water as per the instructions. Then I noticed that small fragments of the foam were breaking off. Don't need those bits getting sucked into the carbs. So, a donation of a couple of rusty Coopers cans from a fellow club member and parts hoarder, and with the help of Jimmy Hilton's spares stash, I have the cans back on. Blasted the crud off the cans, painted them up, put on the obligatory Coopers decals, new gaskets and now my car can breathe again! Idles better without any adjustment and seems quieter.
Now, if would just stop raining for a while..................
Ain't nuthin wrong with Coopers Cans....IMHO

Seems quieter because it most likely is quieter. OEM air cleaner housings are designed to muffle the sound of the intake...
And you can get K&N elements to fit. Not that it is a huge performance gain but you can say you have em in there.B)
Kinda like the air filter set-up on early E-types......it's looks kinda big and clumsy, so tons of them got thrown away in the 60's and 70's in favor of little, open element "performance" filters. All these years later, people are realizing that the original set-up actually work EXTREMELY well with it's HUGE fitler element, large plenum, and dedicated cool air feed from the nose of the car......and as you said, is also nice an quiet.
Now everyone's willing to spend a fortune to get the parts to put their cars back to original......funny how things come full circle. ;)
