The air pump on my 78mgb is not functioning. I was wondering if I can just take the pump off, along with the air manifold and check valve. The air cleaner was already removed. Also the gulp valve does not have a sensing tube.
I have antique plates on the car and do not have to pass emissions, so how much of this stuff can I actually remove?
Thanks
Murphy

Welcome, Dan! I pulled all of it off, not having emissions tests either. Removed everything down to the charcoal cannister, and stopped there. Then found out the line to the cannister was plugged, and useless.
Then I took that out and vented the tank through one of the handy holes in the floor of the boot. Don't plug that vent! Search for my pressurized fuel tank thread.
Dan
I also live in Illinois and have a 68 MGB but my air pump, etc. still function well.
From the Illinois EPA site (http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/faq/testing.html#3 ):
"Q. What vehicles are subject to vehicle emissions inspection?
A. Generally, most 1996 and newer gasoline-powered passenger vehicles, light and heavy duty trucks and busses are subject to testing after they are four years old.
Diesel powered vehicles, vehicles powered exclusively by electricity, and certain other vehicles are not required to test. Check the Exempt Vehicles List for details."
BUT, I believe Federal Law prohibits removal of the emmission control equipment unless it's used for off-road / racing, etc.
.... lastly, why run any car without an air cleaner? Unfiltered air / particles can cause internal engine problems.
Bob
the air cleaner attached to the airpump is gone, not the air filter.
wayne, what did you plug the opening from the air manifold with?
Murphy
Dan. What Bob posted is accurate. It is against Federal Law to tamper with any emmission control systems.
That said, it is up to each state to enforce testing of vehicle compliance.
This means that in many states and areas you can remove emmission control systems and not get caught, today. Keep in mind that enforcement could change at any time.
Ok, that's my official spiel. In reality, if you don't have to run emmission stuff in your neck of the woods it's a good idea to remove the stuff that isn't helping keep your car easily operational.
On the fuel tank and carburetor venting, I am a bit of a stickler. The carbon cannister doesn't rob any horsepower and does perform useful functions, so I recomend keeping the vent system intact, if at all possible.
Check out John Twists's recomendations on de-smogging a car, as I dont' have the free time to go into all the permutations.
