OK, after a 7 year nap, my '71 B (my first LBC) is back on the road. On our fourth short outing as I get things sorted, pulling into the drive I get a high-pitched whine. It's there at idle and goes away when I rev the engine or put it under load.
Listening under the hood, the sound seems to be coming from the area around the alternator. I couldn't find a broom handle (as suggested in an earlier thread) so I can't narrow it down that much more. The alt was pretty warm and seemed to be warmer on the back side (away from the pulley). The alt light is not on.
I'll do more research on the weekend, but is this the most likely source? Or am I missing other possibilities?

Any alternator will get warmer on the back side,,thats where the alt FAN pumps the air
Get a big screwdriver ,,10 or 12 inch Carefully put tip on alt and the handle end against your head ..

7 year naps can affect a lot of things. I wouldn't think the alternator bearings would care that much (they are sealed ball bearing units) - but you never know. I wonder about the water pump? Even the fan belt might have glazed in a way that would make a noise.

Thanks, Terry. Fan belt is new, but I guess water pump is a real possibility. I guess I'll start with my biggest screwdriver per Bernard's suggestion.
