OK, done my due diligence in the search function. Ole Yellers alternator is making a funny noise when cold. Got a rebuilt one at NAPA (only game in town).

With limited tools, like borrowed from Auto Zone, what do I need to take off the pulley and fan?

Looks like one inch socket? Gear puller?? Hep me, hep me!!

Phoenix on Saturday, rain or shine.

Not exactly sure of the size of he nut, but you shoud be able to use an air impact gun and remove the nut. Once the nut is off it should just pull right off by had no puller required. Actually AZ should have swapped it for you. At least when I worked at AZ that was what we did for the customer.

Jim, I got the alternator at NAPA. Didn't think to ask them if they did that sort of stuff. And I don't carry impact wrenches on road trips!

I'll slip by auto zone tomorrow.

Napa should have done it.

An impact gun for the nut and at worst a steering wheel-type puller.

You'll most likely need a puller to get that pulley off.

Impact wrench is the name of the game for sure.

If you put the nut back on the very end of the shaft, hold the fan, then tap the nut with a hammer, there are times that the shock and alt weight will free the shaft from the fan and pulley.
My rebuilt alt came today with a notation that due to an industry wide shortage of fans and pulleys, I'd have to reuse my old ones.

Had to use an air hammer to get one off an old 36amp Lucas model. It might be a good time to do a Saturn swap.

I darn near killed myself the other day trying to get that nut off. I think it was 7/8, IIRC. I didn't have an impact wrench, and finally decided that I liked the rusty look just fine!

Dick, I'm not going to touch that one. I'd get Skyed right on outta here.

One of my favorite movies. Must have seen it fifty times, and I still howl every time.

I'm going to mosey down and talk to Auto Zone. We'll get past this.

The impact wrench would be preferable, but as I plan poorly, I didn't buy an my impact wrench until after I'd pulled the fan off of my old alternator. If Napa won't help and you're in a pinch, you could do what I did and hold a long screwdriver in the fan and loosen the nut with a socket wrench. This required a fair amount of PB Blaster in order to work. The fan blade bent a tiny bit, but for as desparate of a solution as it turned out to be, it was not as destructive as I had anticipated. Just watch what you're doing, and reposition as necessary to avoid doing too much harm. Good luck!

Stop by any service station that has air tools. They'll be glad to remove the nut, pulley and fan from your old alternator and install them on your new one. It'll take less than five minutes and they'll probably not even charge you. RAY

A done deal and no big deal. Went to AutoZone, and they were less than helpfull.

Offered me a big adjustable wrench. Went next door to some automotive place, and they zipped it off with an air wrench.

Back on the road on Saturday, and on to Phoenix,. The adventure continues!

Glad to hear you're back on the road, Wayne. Steve, I did exactly as you describe, even gave it a few days with the PB Blaster, and all it got me was a bunch of bent fan blades and less skin than I started out with. The alternator works fine, so I was just trying to get is cleaned up a little bit. I ended up using a Dremel wire brush to work around the fan blades, straightened the bent ones out and wire wheeled the front. Good enough for government work!
