The "15 minute" Pertronix install just turned into a nightmare. Why would I expect different. When I attempted to start the car, it turned over slow making a clicking noise, with a waft of burning wire in the air. Upon inspection, the white wire to the coil was melted about 1/2 way up the harness. I installed as directed, black to the (-) and red to (+) on the coil, with the white wire to the ignition, even measuring the resistance across the coil (4.3 ohms). Probably toasted the pertronix as well...I just flipped off the garage light, came in and fixed a drink...worry about it tomorrow.

and it sounds so easy in the catalogue! I also installed one over the winter, carefully, step by step, no beer in the garage at all or anything! Went to start her up and NOTHING. Then upon further reading they mention a possible need for an uprated coil. Mine's already got one. Back to VB it went. I was quite happy to be able to reinstall the original assembly!
I've installed three of 'em and never had a problem. Well, except of course for the one I ruined by not paying attention once while doing something else and re-hooking up the red and black backwards (guess why I've installed three and not just two!).
Maybe they sent you the wrong polarity for your car?
Got one I tried to install several years after I got it (kinda duh right there) and same result at Dan. Back to points. Eventually a new dizzy and stay with the points.

When I got my '78 which originally had electronic ignition, it had been changed to a Crane system. I have no idea of how old that once dirty old thing is, but I've ran it 10 years and it has never missed a beat. If my car would have had points I would have never changed over and if I should have had any problems with the Crane I'd change to points.
...............hmmmmmmmmmm, David, think I need to come pick up the little MGA coupe so it doesn't hear all that foul language and become somewhat of a rebel!
That's why I have the Crane XR-700. The Pertronics unit here just sat there and did nothing.
My condesor went south, so I stuck the Petronix in!! It was great!! It has never missed a beat, even though everything else did!! :o) It was basically a 15 minute install, so I can't see what you could possibly have done wrong!! I was talking to my new friend, Loma, in Boise about them, and he said he installs them in all cars that have a distributer problem!! Also, the same with my friends at Octagon in Vancouver!! Oh, you did pull your dizzy to do it, right??
I don't know what's with Petronics and some MGs. We put them in over a dozen old fork lifts when I was parts manager for a truck line and none of them ever missed a beat again. All we ever did was pull the points and condenser and put in the Petronics kit, nothing else.
I have Pertronics put in by a mechanic
who tune-up my 73B about a month now.
I have nothing but good words for this gadget
Was over at LLBC on Monday picking up parts and noticed they have TONS of these devices - they told me they do a great business in them, so I assume they must work sometimes!
