MGB: and since I am in the mood for rants... Part 2

Nov 05, 2009 14:17:25
QikMGB

A short while back Twigworker brought up concerns about OnStar and its abilities. Just heard, for the first time ever, since the government now owns GM an ad on the radio. In the ad, the victim has been in a car crash. The OnStar person is heard calling emergency services requesting help...and....GIVING THE AUTHORITIES THE SPEED AT WHICH THE IMPACT OCCURED!
Full disclosure only refers to our data I guess. Big Brother ?

Another reason to drive old cars. That is unless the idiots succeed in crushing them all. Don't get me started.

ltcouchphd .I originally found the first...and since I am in the mood for rants... in this forum, so just following up in the same.
Sorry to distract you from your MG

Well, at least it is car related. I've seen much worse here.
Tip...If it says rant in the title, chances are there isn't going to be a lot to learn about MGs in the thread.B)

I'm pretty sure the government doesn't literally own GM, or anything, they just gave them lots of money and asked for nothing....
Either way, with modern electronically controlled cars they can pull all that data from the computer after the fact, so its not a GM or OnStar specific thing.

Maybe it's normal for a person my age to be a lot more comfortable with technology in every aspect of life, but I'm not sure why this would be a bad thing. If I have been in a crash, I wouldn't mind if the responders knew what to expect when they showed up. And it's not like you HAVE to use OnStar, it's a paid subscription that you can choose to enable. And it's not like OnStar hasn't been around for 15 years already so I don't know what it has to do with Obama. If you're worried about Big Brother I would be more concerned with the cell phone you probably carry around with you as it can track your every move... which I found very helpful when I tried to call 911 to report a traffic accident (not mine, I just saw it happen) and even though I was unfamiliar with the area they knew right where I was.

Alright I'm done drinking coffee for the day. You see what happens? I wasn't in the mood for a rant and then I read your rant and got in the mood for one myself. This is exactly why I stay out of the OT forum!

Here is OnStar's privacy statement. The section on monitoring conversations is not reassuring.

This stinks!
I do a followup post to one that Twigworker placed a week or so ago, under the same basic heading. His still resides under the MGB header with over 40 responses.
I post a followup and someones nose gets out of joint and I get kicked!!!!
Boy, theres fairness.

They can pull speed data from the air bag computers and, IIRC, it has been used in court. Not a problem if you are not breaking the law, but...

I, for one, would have never seen this thread if Skye hadn't moved it here. I never read any OT type post that is not in the OT section.

Qikmgb,

I thought my question was restrained and to the point. I did not judge your statement or the replys, just that is was off topic. I am sorry that this has upset you. I did not ask for the thread to be moved or report you to Skye. That being said, what is unfair about having it be moved to the appropriate venue? You can obviously still post and others including me can reply.

I caught this thread on the Off Topic Forum (never knew it started elsewhere). Couldn't figure what the ruckus was about.

The post was to the B forum as a follow to Twigers post and "rant".
Somehow it got torqued :D, someone thought it inappropriate, someone else saw it and moved it, others entered in, author was offended, the one who thought it was inappropriate kinda sorta apoligized or at least made his position clear, others are vascillating about BIG BROTHER agendas, still others say get over it and one guy things the government doesn't own GM.

Thats more of a recap then a play by play but here it is in the OT non P...
Had our own version of BIG BROTHER asked me, I'd have moved it to the OTP. But like all BIG BROTHERS they simply do what they will without consultation.....

I for one like the airing of a rant on occasion. Allows some to get it off their chest and others offer exhibition to the rant...

I first saw this on the MGB Forum and just noticed that it got moved this morning. In my opinion, one good reason for moving it is the statement; "... the government now owns GM...". OnStar issues aside, that's a pretty hot topic to be bringing up on the MGB Forum. A lot of people are not happy with the whole government helping the auto industry thing. But, to make an untrue and outlandish statement like the government now owns GM? Sounds like stirring the pot.

Nov 06, 2009 11:38:30
kirks-auto

Ummm John, who is it that owns GM?

GM is owned by:

The United States Treasury, the Crown in Right of Canada, Old GM bondholders, and UAW union

The majority owner is the United States Treasury.

This is not an opinion or a political statement. It is merely a fact.

Have I ever told you that you remind me of the guy who shows up at the knife fight with a gun?
Why do you insist on bringing clarity to a "rants"?
Now how about this BIG BROTHER thing....:bouncing:

We should let Haliburton and its divisions own it, except they might wire the steering wheel to 110 volts

I am being criticized for having started a new continuation to a post, that was residing in the MGB forum. Its really not so much that the post was moved, but the way it occurred. I now understand the confines that relate to the forums and shall if I post anything after this, make every effort to comply with its stringent standards. Enough said about that.
Regarding our US government owning GM, perhaps it would have been more correct to have said that indirectly, we the taxpayers of the USA, own GM. Thanks to the wonderfully arranged transfer of our tax dollars which we joyously advised our seated government to rain upon not only the auto industry but the banking and insurance companies. Hazza!
I cant understand why they missed Mobil/Exon?
And so, I guess now this post will have to be moved to the political general topics.
But be warned...I am somehow going to tie my next post into all this having to do with my MGB and then it'll end up back in that forum having gone full circle.
This is great fun.

John,
You really didn't stray that far. Skye and et al seem to be having bad days. Skye is a really nice and normally almost correct thinking North American...but like the rest, he suffers from the Magnetic North polarity affliction. STILL a 100% OK buy in my book and very kind and understanding to me on several occasions.

That said, the post was filled with a certain ~ and while I am sure you didn't mean that it still was. THAT said, tread lightly when posting to the OTP... there lies within all manners of ill mannered, all sorts of bottom ocean feeding folk, all kinds of :hot: fellows and I am not going to mention those who have real political opinions....

I for one understood your modest intent, your concerns and also the perhaps incorrect forum format. But it was a no brainer. Meanwhile I am getting PMs about my posts in response to your posts...that is how acrid a PC or Non PC comment can come to rein holy terror Jihad on an seemingly innocent observation and small "rant"....

A bloodied veteran of the OTP wars, I can attest that your rant was miniscule compared to the :hot::I3::eyeroll::bouncing:and :X folks who inhabit that forum daily.

All said and done, just relax, have :drinking: root or hops, choice is yours, and don't let the :hot: get to you! I'm with you brother and understand your concerns:beer:

I harbor no Ill feelings to you and am indeed sorry you are suffering from PM's.
