Hi Everybody
All of this talk of newbies has inspired me to register. This summer I adopted a 67 MGB GT from it's loving parents for the last 40 years. I went through a lengthly interview before they would sell it to me. I had to promise to make an honest attempt to get it back on the road and not just part it out. I felt that I had passed the test so I asked if they had thought of a price. Their response was $100.00. I insisted on not paying less than $200.00 because I'm a man of principals.
The car has wire wheels and overdrive but I'm pretty sure it isn't a special. It has 118,000 miles on it. It was parked in a garage 10 years ago because of a bad fuel pump.
Here is my plan (opions welcome)
The car needs sills but I'm going to get it to a point to where I can drive it before I dive into that. The first thing that I'm going to do is the brakes then get it running to see where I am mechanically. I'm hoping to preserve the car as much as possible not restore it. The car has earned all of those little dents and dings. I'm not about to take them away from it.
I already love this thing having never even driven it. Maybe it's the smell.
Just the begining
Mike

Good looking car!
You've found the right place for info. Three years ago I didn't know anything about MG's and now I'm a genious(just kidding).
Be sure to check out the library section esp. the awkening an MG article and use the search function. Get yourself a hanynes or bentley repair manual, Moss Motors catalog, Victoria British Catalog, Rick Astley's MGB wiring book(the red one) and you'll have tons of MG knowledge. Check out BHive for parts as well.
Get new tires for sure.
Good luck!

Welcome to the MGE !
"The car has wire wheels and overdrive but I'm pretty sure it isn't a special."
Dont talk that way, It is very special and with a little more patina it will become more so.
Excellent purchase. Keep us posted on your findings.

Mike, I think you have exactly the right plan. It's rare to see someone willing to put in the work to get the car running before deciding to tear it to bits. You're miles ahead of the average newbie already and I commend your carefully thought-out plan. I wouldn't change a thing! :)

Now, if the worst happens and the chassis is too far gone to save, you will be able to sell the gearbox alone for five times what you paid for the entire car. I would say you did quite well for yourself! A desirable year, too. Don't be concerned with the "special" thing, it really wasn't anything special at all. It was simply an accessory kit you could buy from the dealer.

I need to start hanging out with a better crowd. Been looking for a GT off and on for a couple years and the only things I've found is rust buckets going for $1,500 and more (sometimes way more). Never mind no OD. Congratulations on finding a terrific deal and enlightened sellers!

Nice motor.

Get it running and drive it like you stole it. Oh! hang on at 200 buck you did steal it. :D

I'm greener than the car with envy.

Welcome to the '67 GT Club. You got quite a deal, man. I bougt mine for under $1000... actually around $650.00... but it was not running and required new "everything" to include rear quarters, rocker panels, floor pans etc. Enjoy it!!!

'67 is the best year for these cars, no question. And I'm completely unbiased, you can trust me. I'm almost at the end of the road you're starting on, and I hope to roll out of the garage within a month.

Thanks for all of the kind words. I've already decided to save this thing. If it needs major mechanical work along with the bodywork it's just going to take longer. I have a quick Spitfire to terrorize the neighbors with in the meantime. A chunk of rust fell in my eye last night while pulling the slave cylinder and I didn't even get mad. I must be in love.
