Last chance to buy a brand new one:

It's quiet sad really, these things have been the traditional 1st car for students out here since the 80's, I'll be quiet sad to see them go, good honest cars with unmatched spares prices.

I still would've loved one of the brand new Beetles you could buy from Mexico until a few years ago...

Chris, my wife drove an '82 Scirocco from 150k miles to almost 300k miles. We then got an '89 Cabriolet with 180k on it, and she drove it about 70k or 80k miles. Hard to say because the odometer stopped at about 238k. The parts are really inexpensive, and they are as easy to work on as MGs. We finally bought a Japanese car (Mazda) for her.

I'm reading something wrong, or there is a math problem in the article. 1974 to 2009 is 35 years, not 25!

I think they're talking about the production under the brand name "Citi Golf" which only started when they started producing the Golf 2. Not a bad run though.. thats 14 years longer than the B !

The first car I drove was a 78 Rabbit diesel. My first car was an 84 Jetta diesel that I bought in 91 while I was in University. That Jetta could pass nothing but a gas station. It was so easy to work on and parts were cheap and easy to come by and gave almost 60 mpg. I had that car for about 5 years before selling it for a 90 Jetta. I miss that car.

The MK1 Golf GTI was a hoot to drive. I had a few friends when I was in college in the early 90's that would modify these cars. It was like a cult. They went and handled pretty well. the MK2 GTI was also a lot of fun, especially the 16v version.
