Working on getting the sills ready and waiting for all the stuff I need for the job. Meantime I still run the car for 30 min a week just to keep it fresh. The car has always backfired at high revs not so bad that it's really annoying but does really bother me. I messed with the timing and had no change with the backfire, the carbs could probably use some work but seem to have even air flow and pretty close with mixture. Now this is what I'm getting to, today I removed the dash and only replaced the ignition wiper and oil pressure units. When I went to start the car the fuel pump seemed to be running extra fast possibly because of the lighter load on electrical (I'm guessing). Then I reved the engine and possibly saw a flash of fire come from the carb, if it did light on fire it only lasted a quick moment, I did try reving it agin with serious caution and it did't repeat. So my conclusion is that there may be too much fuel running to the carbs and that might be the cause of the back fire in the exhaust? I thought the fact that the carb possibly cought fire proved that any excess gas isn't being handled properly. So is this possible or does it even make sense?
Im really new to all this, the car was sitting in my garage when I bought the house and hadn't been touched since 86 at the latest. Got her running and changed most of the fluids, new tank and after market fuel pump but Im really low on cash so little money for fresh parts or pros. The engine was possibly changed out or something because the numbers are missing and I haven't been able to contact the previous owner. As for my skills, forget about it before I got the car I had never even changed my oil but I am officially an addict (just ask the wife).

Don't sweat the back fire thing at this point.
You have a long way to go with the sills and just keeping the engine limbered up while the car sits there is enough. You will have plenty of time later, when the body work is completed, for you to make it run right.
BTW: If I were you I wouldn't be starting and running the engine the way you are doing it.
Instead, I would dump in a couple of containers of Stabile and then fill the tank on top of that with fresh gasoline, fire the engine up and let it run fro fifteen minutes or so and then shut it down. This will get the Stabile mix out into the pump and carbs.
Then I would pull the plugs and squirt in an ounce or so of Marvel Mystery Oil in each hole and spin the motor for a few revolutions. Cover the plug holes because the MMO is going to be spewed out to some degree.
After that I would screw the plugs back in fully home but not completely tight.
Then I would pull the distributor cap and shoot the insides of the distributor with WD40 and leave the dist cap off.
Then I would spend some quality time cleaning and servicing the battery(s) and cable terminals, leaving the ground cable disconnected at the battery.
If you have the wherewithal, buy a pulse battery tender and set it up to keep the battery in good shape.
Leave the cover off of the battery box for easy access and then once every two or three weeks reconnect the ground cable and spin the engine for a couple of ten second sessions.
Fresh oil and fresh cooling system mix would be a good thing to begin with too.

Sounds like a plan how much gas should I put in there and will I be draining this or using it eventually? Whats MMO? Thanks for the advice
Dump the Stabile stuff in first and then FILL the tank with gasoline to the level of the bottom of the rubber inlet hose. What you are doing by that is displacing the air in the tank above the gasoline and thereby reducing the level of rust that would normally form on the inside surfaces of the tank due to moisture in said air.
Keeping the tank full is a good idea whether the car is being stored or used semi-regularly for the same reasons.
MMO is Marvel Mystery Oil. It comes in a red and black container and is said to fix anything mechanical and help with impotency when needed. It is the prettiest ruby red color imaginable, so much so that I once took a very small sip just assure myself that I was not missing the nectar of the Gods. LOL

That makes a ton of sense, now I understand what happened to you :spinning: LoL Thanks now to figure out how to get all that gas to my house.
