I plan on fitting a battery isolation switch to my car which has a single 12v battery in the left hand cradle.

My initial thought is to fit it on the rear bulkhead behind the left hand seat, and accessable from inside the car.

Has anybody fitted one, and where did you put it?

Owen I put mine behind the right hand seat ;) on the negative side of the battery.

Behind passenger seat in front of battery box. I,m more afraid of electrical fire than I am theft. Instead of 'hiding' it just get one with removable key.

Owen. That's where I put mine. In fact, I need to install one on the '79 LE I recently purchased. It's safer to switch the ground side of the battery, but if the positive cable has a badly corroded end, I usually shorten it and attach that to the switch. Then run a new cable from the switch to the positive terminal.

Either way works, it's just safer to switch the ground as there is less of a fire hazard if the new cables somehow short to the body.

I have the single 12 volt on the passenger side and the switch on the panel in front of the battery. It is easily reachable from the driver's seat and is easy to use. I put it on the negative cable. This is on my '68.

Same here... behind the passenger seat, wired to the ground cable. Also, have a removable key like Jim.

Mine’s on the deck behind the passenger seat hooked into the negative (ground) side.

When I added the cut-off switch I also added the waterproof 12v powerpoint for cell phones, navigation etc. Real easy job

Hi Owen:
Mine is very similar to Ted's.I use it all the time, but one small hitch is that when u have it on the ground side,if u inadvertently shut the isolation switch off with the car running it will continue to run, because the alternator is still charging. It does it's job & isolates the battery,so that u can't start but if u use it as a emergency shutdown it is probably not going to do it's job. I have heard there is ways around this with it still on the ground side and I am hoping someone will chime in.I don't think u would have this problem if it was on the positive side although I haven't tried.

Mount it in a place you can easily reach while sitting in the drivers seat. Mine is behind the passenger seat of the GT. I constantly forget that I have flipped it off. If I had to get out and back in to access it each of those times my Chiropracter would be a happy man.

It will not shut the engine off if installed on either side of the battery if the alternator is charging.

Many racing organizations require a switch with additional contacts to turn the alternator sensing signal off. These switches are normally installed on the positive side of the battery. The switch has two big terminals and two small terminals. It is hooked to the alternator by running the brown/yellow wire from the alternator to one of the small switch terminals and run a wire from the other small switch terminal back to the alternator warning light.

Thanks for all the input, folks.

Looks like you all have the same location as I have in mind. I'll use a switch with a removable key doubling as a safety switch and to a degree anti theft as the B will be living outdoors.

Mine is going in the trunk where the fuel pump used to be.

Cool. This is the switch I used and that I'd recommend for really doing the job right:

After twenty years, I'm starting to think about re-locating my switch. A lightweight drycell battery mounted above the passenger's feet would be a nifty weight reduction project...
