John D. Weimer

And every day that you have a simple LBC t work on. I got out of the business in 1976, but I swear, I've never worked on anything as demanding, complicated, and down right cantankours and this VW Diesel. Tom B was wise to stick with MGs, Fiats, and such. I got the engine hung in the Jettup today and it took 3 solid hours after I lifted it off the floor and I couldn't have done it without my "cherry picker" lift with casters on all the wheels. Lower an inch, look from every angle, go another inch, scootch over an inch, lower an inch, push back an inch, lower an inch, twist this way an inch, lower an inch, scootch the other way an inch, lower an inch, Twist this way an inch, lower an inch, pull out an inch, well you get the picture and everything had t be checked with every move. Right when you think you're there things start binding up and the "spool type" mount can't be positioned to slip between its holding ears. Finally after 20 minutes of lowering, lifting, pushing, pulling, scootching sideways, and coaxing the left mount bolt goes through one ear and through the spool, but not out the other ear and the place it too tight to get an aligning punch into, there's barely enough room for my small fingers; Tony, Chuck, Gerry, or Gary wouldn't be able to get one of their big fingers in there. Lift, jiggle, look, pry, lift, giggle, look again, shore up fron the bottom and lower, so the engine can rock a little, and finally it moves, but too damned far and the bolt still can't come through. Lower, jiggle, look, pry, Lord knows how many times and it finally gets close enough to tap through. Then I could install the left mount, too tight a spot to lower the engine in with it on, jack it into place and battle that bolt, but I won. One thing I don't allow to happen when I'm working on a car. I won't allow myself to get angry or fustrated. It was 97F with the heat index about 5F higher, but I was wearing my Beavis and Buthead shorts, a T-shirt, had a quart of iced tea at hand, and was in the shade. By 4:00 PM I had enjoyed about all that I could stand and it was Miller time. I popped a Miller Genuine Draft, sipped it in the shade, then into my hammock for an hour and a half nap in the shade. Reflecting on the day I realize I throughly enjoyed doing what I do best or I would have been out & about doing something else. Life is good.
