MGB: brake pads

Have you guys found brake pads that don't fit? In that you can't get both of them in the caliper. An evil voice says sand them, but I'm resisting.

Never had any that wouldn't go when the piston(s) were shoved all the way in and the pads centered.

I'm glad you asked. Mine squeak like gerbils in heat. I was thinking about greasing them but decided not to.
What can I do? Change pads?

just how do Gerbils squeak?

Like Wrays brakes!!

Try pulling the pads and putting a light smear of "disc brake quiet", a very thin smear of silicone, or a thin smear of silicone grease, disc brake lube, or dielectric compound on the backs of them. That's the area where squeaks usually originate. The slides on single piston sliding calipers is another area where squeaks can originate, but we don't have that type calipers.

Semi-mteallic pads were the only thing that finally worked on mine.

I went through several sets of stock pads and they all sqeeked. When I replaced them with V8 pads, sqeeks went away plus I had better brakes

Gerry - are those V8 pads a direct replacement for stock pads?

May 26, 2003 12:14:41
Gerry

Yep!

I'm going to get some.

Are the V8 pads larger than the normal pads? Is that why they perform better?

May 26, 2003 18:05:13
Gerry

Yep! Larger by 20% or so and a direct replacement

In what way are they larger? I just put pads on my B (Rotex pt no. D0071D), and they seemed to completely fill the calipers, with very little margin between the edge of the friction material and the edge of the backing plate. I'm having trouble visualising...

Cheers!

Yu got it the first time. I just need some that will fit the calipers. Those just might be the next set.

Get a set of XKE pads, redrill the holes & you have even larger pads covering more of the disc!

What for Tony??? My brakes work great!! Maybe it is because there is stil enough mass to cool it all down!!

Cool -- thanks for the photos. I wouldn't have guessed there was that much open space at the "bottom" of the caliper...

Cheers!
