I've had my brake m/c off and noticed that the rod and clevis just falls out. Is there supposed to be something to hold it in place or is that a function of the pedal and spring? Seems like it ought to at least be snug.

The clevis pin holds the rod to the pedal and should have a cotter key. The other end just fits through the seal and rides free in the m/c.
Chris has that right. I just finished replacing my clutch and brake M/C and thats the way it is!

The only cars I ever saw that had any kind of brake push rod retainer in the M/C were old Fords. You had to get positively brutal to get the push rod out.
There is a grooved ring in the m/c end of the rod-what is that for? Doesn't seem to hook in anything.
Don't know, but nearly all of them I've seen, no matter what make, have it.
