Years ago ( 20 or more) I had a 3 main that was just rebuilt when it was sent into a coma w/ about 100 miles on it (due to the fact that the body disentigrated around it).
The patient was removed and placed into a cellar - the plugs were pulled and @ 1-2 oz. of motor oil was placed into each cylinder, and then the plugs were replaced, and the patient was left alone to rest. Each year I would visit and spin the flywheel to be sure that it didn't freeze up- and it hasn't. -Now I am ready to revive the patient-a new body w/ only 27k was found - the OD has been rebuilt (by Quantum) and it is warm enough to actually attempt the transplant. SOO Ya got any ideas before I start this ordeal????

I would start by changing the oil and filter, check and adjust the valves, points, etc. While it might not be needed, a new water pump to insure against bearing failure.

If you can get a starter hooked to it, it might be cool to get it to spin over and get the oil pressure up before you put it in the car.

I am sure that others will have better information, but this is what hits me right away after reading the post.

It's also good to know that I am not the only one who keeps stuff around for years and years.

Drain oil first.

Might be some concern with scale from the water jackets. Might pull the water pump and check condition from there.

You might want to replace the front and rear main seals. They can go bad just sitting.

After 20 years, the seals might be kind of "crispy". You might want to consider changing them as they might start leaking after you start the engine and run it a while. Unless you don't mind pulling it again.

It will not survive. Just give me an address to pick it up. After extensive intensive, I will put it in my Magnette, the proper environment for rehabbed 3 brg 1800s.

Retorque the head first. Then just fire it up & change the oil & filter after an hour's running, them retorque again hot.

You would only need a timing cover seal, 3 mains have no rear seal.

You're right. My bad.

It's doable. My '63 was mothballed with an engine that had about 2000 miles on it. The car was in a heated garage for 20 years, then I fired it back up several years ago. It's just fine. What saved it IMO was the fact that the engine was very clean on the inside. You're in the same boat.

Like has already been said, treat the engine like it's getting a 100 mile service after a rebuild. I'd consider taking the carbs apart and cleaning them out well.

Carefully inspect the fuel hoses and carb pigtails, and consider just replacing it all. One of the fuel hoses on my '63 cracked and shrunk while sitting, and fuel poured out first time I activated the fuel pump. The damage was invisible inside the stainless steel braid.
