Remember the 79 that only would run on 2 cylinders, even after changing out plugs, wires, coil, etc?
Before taking the maniflolds off to check for rags in the 2 and 3 cylinders, I took it back to my favorite mechanic to have it put on the diagnostic machine.
Glad I did. Obie called to me "Hey look at this!" His machine said I had a 6 cylinder engine. He popped the dist. cap, and lo and behold, there was a disc with 6 windows in it instead of four!
A new Crane disc is on its' way here and will arrive tomorrow morning from Tacoma, the only known piece on the west coast.
Grins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And to those of you who were sure it was electronic, you were in the ballpark, closer than me by a home run.

99.9% of the time it's electrical, but most people start fooling with carbs.

Damn! Can you beat that? I simply couldn't believe the rag thing, but the real problem takes the cake. None of us ould have came up with that in a million years.

You got that right Tom. Why they always go for the carb is a mystery to me. I guess it's a mystery to them too, but they can see sparks so that makes everything OK on that end.

Well, this one smelled of me leaving an obstruction, given the siamese ports and all. And the obvstruction could only have been in the head, given that 1 and 4 had too much fuel, while 3 and 4 got none. All the while the valves were going up and down and there was compression.
I'm still grinning and will until I pick up the piece tomorrow and pay the freight!
They said it will be less than $100, but you never know if they mean $99.99 or $9.99.

Acted just like a bad distributor cap. I had the problem surrounded, but never would have found it long distance like this. Still I wouldn't have given up on it being igniton no matter what.

Reminds me of what an old mechanic said. " Never tinker with Swiss watches or SU carbs, except if they're dead."

There ya go! Long distance is hard, and I'm surprised at the accuracy level of this board. But, I guess most of us have been there, done that, with (as a group) just about every problem there is.
I was leaning to rags in the head. :) Never personally done it and figured it was my turn.

Now that the other shoe has dropped, this reminds me of something I read somewhere or was told about. I think it was a Spitfire that made it home one time by using a TR6 distributor. Ran poorly but made the distance.
I'm glad you got it worked out Chris. This one was a real puzzle.
