Im currently working on rebuilding my mg and i was wondering where the best place is to get quality parts that are resonably priced ( moss seems awful high to me)
im looking for things like sterilite valve seats , valves , new cam. things along those lines all the other stuff ive been getting pretty cheap.

Moss will sell at VB prices if you ask them to, or at least they do for me. The reciprocal is not true.

Mark,

I am near to completing a rebuild of a 71 B roadster which came to me with many parts lost/liberated. There is a company in the UK which specialises in used parts and can provide virtually everything big or small. I have found their parts to be very clean, very sound and also cheap. The company is called Cheshire Classic Car Spares and they have a website (www.cheshireclassic.demon.co.uk)
Not sure how much shipping would be (presume you're in the US) but if you've got a few things to get at once it could be ok. Their UK telephone number is 01244 300270 - speak to Martin who is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Don't forget local suppliers. Even the big chain stores, like NAPA, Pep Boys, Autozone can order some parts, expecially mechanical items, such as brakes, starters, alternators, etc. I've never tried for more exotic parts, like main bearings, but I wouldn't be surprised if they can get them.

I have gotten a starter, brake shoes, brake lines, thermostats, belts, hoses, a coil, distributor cap and of course spark plugs and filters locally. My local Advance Auto Parts was able to quote a price for a rebuilt distributor for my 1970 roadster. I haven't yet bought it.

The starter I got was a Lucas unit, rebuilt by Lucas in the UK for $89.95. It was identical to the one it replaced, even down to the markings stamped in the housing. Moss wants something like $170 for one.

Of course, when you go to a local store, you may have to endure "what's an MG?" and "is that a foreign car?", but who cares, if they can save you money.

Some of the local suppliers will have parts for things like brakes, alternators, starters, etc. You need to watch their prices, as there can be a huge variance.
For the other stuff, you'll end up with VB, or MOSS, or
TRF, Proper MG, and such.
If you get hooked up with one of the suppliers/re-sellers, you can often get 10 to 15 % off of their prices, including sales. Some of the suppliers will even drop ship directly to you ( depending on who you're ordering from, Moss will, VB won't...).

On the first page of this site, go to Table of Contents. Page down to Garages/Parts. Many good links there. The third one down is "new/used parts" which links you to the Lundgren site. A very complete listing of sources, addresses, phone numbers, web sites.

Enjoy!
