Hi all,

I am seriously thinking of buying a 1970 MGB but am confused that the car number doesn't match the lists that appear in this website.

The car has a model number YGHN4 which according to the lists was introduced Nov 1967 and is the first of the Mk II's. The Y is for Australian delivery, this is good as I reside in Australia.

The car number is 541. According to the lists this is a 1962 car. (or is this the Body number ??)

The engine number is 18GD/RWE/H/640. This is not stamped on a plate but stamped directly onto the engine (is this OK) and the same number is on the VIN plate.

The car has all the features of a Mk II Australian delivered car.

Can anybody shed some light as to the exact date/model of this car and more importantly, do the car numbers match and is it OK to buy as the condition of it is excellent.

Regards
Chris Theodor

Your engine number would be 67-68, home or export market, but not the US.
GHN4 indicates a MK ll, 67-69. There should be numbering following the GHN4 which would be your car number.
I don't believe you have a 62.
Do you have push button door handles? Those went out with the 64s that were registered as 65s.

Chris,
I vaguly remember that the YGN aussy cars were sort of assembled as kits in AUS. As such, if I remember correctly, they had a different numbering system for the chassis numbers than the production line cars which recieve their numbers at the coach works that assembled the chassis.
The '69 vintage engine numbe would match very well with a '70 AUS assembled car, what with the shipping delays and such.
It sounds like the car is pretty original, and I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you into a 'orignal concours restoration' project.
