I've got a 74.5 with a 18V engine that I believe came out of a '72, HIF carbs. The engine runs fine in the garage (not ready for the road yet). But it's missing some plumbing and I need help in determining what goes where. Note that there is no pollution stuff on the engine other than the carbon can... no air pump or gulp valve (what the hell's a gulp valve anyway?).

First, there is no hose going to the vacuum advance on the dizzy. I believe that's supposed to come from the intake manifold but I see no port to plug a hose into. However there is a suspicious looking bolt screwed into the manifold (Item A in the pic). Is this where I get the vacuum from?

Next, the ports on both carbs labelled "B" are open. I believe these go to the carbon can. Is that correct?

The ports on the carbs labelled "D" are both plugged shut with RTV or something similar. They're not connected to anything. Should they go somewhere or is leaving them plugged ok?

And finally the breather on the front tappet cover labeled "C" is open. Where does that guy go?

Any help with these questions would be met with my eternal gratitude.
Dave

These are my HS4's - maybe this will help.

Dave,

for the vacuum advance, there are some of the HIF rear carbs that have a small pic up tube underneath the throat in the area of the butterfly axle (~1/8" diam.). check out whether your rear carb has it fitted there too. If not, you can try to pick up vac. at the manifold by replacing one of the bolts on top wit a pic up bolt (OEM for some B's). Use one of the rearmost small holes and exchange/modify the bolt there.
B is on both carbs and it is the pipe connection for the overflow of the float chambers. The overflow pipes were connected there with a short length of rubber hose and fixed to the front screw of the fuel pump blanking plate underneath the exhaust manifold by P-clips. The pipes run down the block and end up about 1 inch below the flange of the oil pan. You should not run the car without them!
C is connected to an angular rubber hose and a Y-joint that has hoses fitted that run to the D pipe on both the carbs. It is the crank case vent connection for oil fumes.

Hope this helps

Ralph

Dave, maybe this one picture will help show what I have on my '74 with HIF's.
Disregard the old and dirty parts, as this is just after I bought the car and I've cleaned and replaced hoses since then.

Jim G, 2 questions. First, is the hose in front that comes off the "Y" connector going to the vent on the front tappet cover? And second, is the hose coming off the intake manifold going to the vacuum advance?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes on both questions.
