Hi
I'm giving my two SU carbs a good clean and overhaul and I've come to the bushes on the spindles which are pretty worn so I'm about to order some new ones and replace them but in the Moss parts book it says 'Machine after fitting' and in the Haynes manual it says that should they need replacing you'll probably need to buy a whole new carb body!
So I take it that it's not just a straight forward job. Could anyone please enlighten me as to what needs to be done to replace them?
Cheers

Here is a starting point. It is a link to the tech archives on the Chicagoland site.

If you don't want to invest in the materials and tool you could give a shout to several folks on this site. Jimmy Hilton is one.

I seem to remember Jimmy was offering rebushed SU bodies on an exchange basis at a decent price.

You need special tools to rebush the carbs. A number of people on the BBS are known for doing excellent work. Another alternative is ZTherapy - these folks work mostly on Datsun 240Z Hitachi SU carbs but will also do standard SUs. They replace the bushing with a sealed bearing unit. They did mine and the result was superb. I note that Hap and I have a running debate about whether the bearing is better than the bushing, but mine are sure smooth and have no play whatsoever.
