No. I suggest not running the engine until you find the cause, a red hot converter can set your car on fire. Look for carburetor flooding or a defective choke.

In the Moss catalog (and probably online somewhere), John Twist has a write up on the Zenith carbs and how to adjust. In there he says that a red-hot cat converter is a sign of too rich (and then goes on to explain the adjustment needed).

Easy stuff if your carb is in decent shape and you have the tool to adjust it.
