Just like they did it in Wolfsburg many years ago. Now have this guy try that on a VW Jetta..;)
Let's just see him adjust the tension on it while it's running :D
As anyone familiar with air cooled VWs knows, the pulley on the generator has shims inbetween the two halves to adjust the tension. Seems like this little exercise, while a neat trick, would be pointless. The tension would virtually always be wrong.

I used to work on bugs for a living - your statement is true for over 90% of the bugs that came into the shop! :)
Did exactly that from 63 to 65. Then a bought a socket that fit the nut behind the fan shroud when I needed to replace the generator. After that I did it the safe way. Just like a sprint car, push to start was very common.

I love that...that's had me cracking up for the last little bit here.
I removed the end of a finger with a table saw. I've been a lot more careful of moving parts since. Personally, I don't think I'd try that one.
