I know this is a novice question but I just wanted to make sure I do it the right way. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that in order to change the coolant you must drain this hose...

and then put the new coolant in this....

any clarification or direction would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Austin - what year is this? I know my '71, but I think you need fill it at the radiator.

Well, you can drain the coolant that way. Go to AutoZone and get one of their $0.99 "T" adaptors to flush it - gotta clamp it in the heater hose - 1/2" ID I think. Prestone makes one too. Flush & reverse flush with a garden hose. I think you fill a '78 at the radiator. Your 2nd picture is the overflow tank.

You are correct.
For a thorough change, drain thoroughly from this location, fill, run to temp.
Then drain, fill, run to temp, top off, done!

Draining from this hose, drains the radiator side and the engine side. A good time to change the inexpensive thermostat also.

On a 77-80 it is a little more cumbersome. Drain by disconnecting the hose. Open the fill hole that is on top of the water pump. Reclamp the hose. Slowley fill and then put the plug back in. Turn it over a few times. Open the plug back up. Repeat until you are sure the air is out. It takes awhile.

I recently did my first empty and fill (not an official flush and fill) on my 80 B while disconnecting my heater core. I drained via the lower hose as mentioned. To fill, I cut the upper main hose and installed a T fitting I had hanging around facing up. Then I put a cap on that T.

Yes. You have to drain at the lowest point. That would be at the the place where the lower radiator hose connects. While your at it check and replace the hoses if they are soft.

Just did this today.

The draining point is correct. I did not fill it with overflow tank.

I filled it over the top thing i dont know the name of. SO here is a picture attached.

Hope this helps

Martin that was a multi function item, it is the smog pump bracket, and the thermostat cover as well as the coolant fill.

I need to drop a few inches in the radiator on my '77 to replace the cooling switch. Is there an easier way to drain a little other than the hose at the bottom? Sure wish I had the drain plug the older ones have.
