Can someone tell me if it is ok to remove the charcoal can in the trunk as well as the vaper hose that goes with it? Will it affect performance? I seem to be getting a lot of gas vapors in the trunk. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Fred,

Not sure about removing the canister. Moght beable to if all smog equip. is removed as well.

You might consider refurbishing the canister, it can be refilled with activated charcoal found
at fish store ie. petco/petsmart and the like.

I've faced that issue twice. 10 years ago I wrote a letter to the tech person for NAMGBR (North American MGB Register). His suggestion was to clamp off the hose from the fuel tank going to the trunk collection canister. And place a 1/8" hole on the inside of the gas cap to allow the necessary venting air escape, to make up for the job the clamped off hose used to do. I've done it twice without any problem.
The hole is only drilled through the inner piece.........not through and through.

Hopefully someone more technical can verify.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply and picture. I'll try that. Gotta get rid of the gas fumes in trunk.

The can in trunk is a gas vapor separator. The charcoal cannister is under the under. The can is to prevent fuel from going to the charcoal cannister. I guess a person could remove the can and plug the line and put a vented gas cap in.

The fumes in your trunk are likely from a bad rubber hose running from the gas tank to the vapor seperator, that Maurice mentioned. The hose is encase in a steel mesh, so it's hard to tell if it's shot.

My plan is to eliminate it from my 72. I'm going to cap the hose attachement on the gas tank, and vent the gas cap.
