addendum to rear deck boot prep and paint

i have to thank pooch down in OZ for responding , however something i said he said set me off and i was having flashbacks and had to go lie down for 2 or 3 days..
is it DPO means Dedicated Present Owner ? ,, or defecated present owner

i only submit because.. it is a real ongoing MG Experience.. and i owe it to share or submit you to it//

shooting evercoat G2 featherfill on suspect substrate //

i wanted to shoot on friday the 13 , however i spent that day masking out
this was event one , no practice , just load and go..

lesson one : the inexpensive turbine comes with a big needle organic and a lesser shipped separate ..
wait for the little needle and use it..
the feather fill is quite liquid and on my next shoot i intend to thin 10% acetone..

i mixed up 16oz .. tried a quick test on a old jerrycan and then tried to lay it..

sputtered pretty bad and had 16 oz on the bonnet before i knew it..

ooops

loaded and shot 3/8 gallon in 16 OZ increments..

last time i went up to this levels of protection o was in the live Agent room at FT McCellan

[ can o grow begonias in here i thought as the M8 Alarms screamed]

it is a learning experience getting the needle valve adjusted correctly

i think i got the product on too Damn thick,, see the droplets on the edge ,, lots of sags and drips , but it is a poly high build,, put it on .. sand it off ,put it on sand it off..
until it suits..

the bonnet with 16 OZ produced looked all right , i will sand that some and apply more..

reallly got upset when in the midst of my shoot the neighbors started mowing leaves and throwing dust up..

if i do not improve i will need to procure a second gallon to apply , and sand off..

i had washed the areas that lifted/'crazed. curdled / with acetone prior , seemed OK ,, however did gert a little reaction..
no problem to me , put it on san it off , put it on sand it off.

on the next application i suspect the reaction will be less or not seen..

after all its Just paint and it will provide good tight protective layer..

Mike,
That stuff doesn't require a etching primer on the bare-metal spots?

Your a braver man than I.

all in all a learning experience well worth the effort..

i had 8 MPH winds which i thought too much but it went calm at dusk , for a shoot ..

it calls for 100 min dry prior to sanding but it seems a little soft yet to me , so i will sand all my orange peel , sags and drips , install the smaller needle , thin 10% acetone , and do it again ,, and again until the product meets my standards..
put it on .. sand it off , put it on sand it off,,

using blocks and long boards could get a pretty nice surface , or maybe not...

this is high build primer first app.; Buff color..

clay
spec is for etch on all bare metal over 1/4 inch .
FFG2 is rated for app over etch , i had few areas of bare metal the largest ones got rattlecan eastwood etch..

i never did this before ,, just suck it up and do it..
i figure by the time i shoot a couple gallond Feather fill on and sand it off my skills might be up to shooting color , o. i expect to sand it with 1500//

am sanding this surface w/ 320 on blocks and boards, when it pleases me i will sand it with 400

prior to color..

I am lost for words.

Nice pickle you have going on under the runs.

At least you were not going to get any bugs or dust or leaves on you with that outfit on.

well .. its a 10 $ suit.. a 12 $ bandit mask and nitril gloves,, they are weak, the gun cleaner solvent ate then like cotton candy..

IM DEAD i thought then sighed ,, its not S*** r s*** im workin today..

maybe today i should take a pic of the sag and drip on the door panels .. pityful

put it on sand it off

really .. even though my application was ,, sorry ,, sanding that high build poly off
with boards and blocks should build character.. and perhaps a flat finish that would be the envy of anyone ..

or maybe not //

I'm painting a truck at the moment, warm up for doing my MGB GT. This is the first time I've used an HVLP gun with a turbine air supply. I didn't get any runs with the primer or sealer, but I did have lots of overspray. I did some reading yesterday, I think my droplet size is too big. I'm spraying color today and really don't want to sand and buff (it is a truck), so I'll read my setup instructions again and go for it. Good luck with the B!

a sloppy dripping mess...
after pushing long board @320 its smoothed out nice ..

wanted to get some 220 grit , as io am working w. 320.. 50 bucks a roll ,, forget that

what will 500 hours on the long board on premium high fill produce ?????

I sprayed mine last weekend (the truck) after blocking the primer back to smooth (too much orange peel). DON'T FORGET (like I did) that paint is MUCH thinner than primer. My horizontal surfaces look pretty good, but my first vertical surface, passenger door, had terrible runs in it. I should have backed off on the material by about 1/3 to 1/2. Subsequent coats came out much better, but I've made more work for myself after I finish painting (haven't done the bed yet) to get the thing smooth and shiny again. Good luck with yours!

this is my first event with spray..

PDG i think

on the side surfaces i got runs and sags,,i sanded on them with the long board and was seeing the paint i laid over peaking through,, ,,

first app was with the 2 MM spout, i *finally* got the 1.5 in ,, after i go around with the blocks on a warm day [60 F] going to shoot again ,, with the 1.5 MM and thinned product

this evercoat feather fill is interesting,, sands easy ,, adheres tight .. high build poly,,

if i can get my energy up and sand around to satisfaction and a warm still day comes i hope to lay the rest of this gallon on ,, then block sand over winter.... i am putting buff color on,, if i feel the need to apply more product , i think i will get a qt of Grey and an qt of black,,
lay them on .. should be interesting to block sand and think of the ****LUCKY***next owner if he /she determines to *go to metal *..

You a funny guy.

I tested sanding the orange peel with 2000 grit tonight and it looks like it should be no problem. I will need to respray one fender, I got into the primer while trying to remove a run. Not a big deal, just a little more time.

I reinstalled the grill and some of the trim, but the new paint makes the old anodized trim look terrible. I could have it re-anodized, but I don't think its worth the expense. Have you guys had any luck painting aluminum trim with a satin or semi gloss black? I think it would suit the truck better anyway, give it a more modern appearance..

Nov 22, 2009 00:50:28

john

nice to see a remark

i painted the mesh in front of the radiator with rattle can black epoxy *appliance* paint.. looks good .glossy finish.. .. i had used it on the inside surface of the fiberglass fairing and its holding up good there.
i did a salt water immersion test with this stuff inside some of the bioreactor tanks of my fish tank [ 13,000 gallon] and it held up surprisingly well. 9 months to failure in saltwater immersion ain't no beans..

i am glad to hear 2000 grit will smooth the finish,, i expect to have to a lot of that . except i can not find any rolls of 2000 for my longboard and blocks so i suppose the 1500 must suffice..

regards painting trim ,why not? i think flat black trim would look better than glossy but wonder about surface prep so it will stick good,

i finished sanding around again with 320 reduced all the drips and sags , but have not got fully flat finish yet. ,, too late to shoot again this week today was a good day 63 F and no wind but i was not ready , and another wet spell is due in.. so i suppose i will keep blocking with 320..

wife was on the phone with a friend i overheard her say i do not understand this , first he puts it on then he sands it off, he did the same thing with the body work .

i have been worried about my heart lately and went on a new regime supposed to reduce my risk by 54 % ,, supposed to have either 3/4 liter red wine [ the danish study] or nine shots of whiskey[ the Spanish study] every day .. i figure if one gets the solvent BAC levels high enough in the blood it just dissolves all that old plac in the arteries heh

i wonder if i can get a doctor[quack] to buy into that spanish study and write me a prescription for 90 grams of Single MALT iRISH EVERY DAY .. WONDER IF THEN MY INSURANCE WOULD BUY IT

HAHAHAHAA,,
if i start the regime before i start work on the machine it has a serious effect on my out put..

PS:
pooch..

aaa yes my primary desire in life is to amuse.. i have been thinking if i need to get more product [ same type , different color]
that i will finger sand words in to the bonnet then put on the contrasting colors .. ..

SURPRISE ..or "Hi There" comes to mind ..or perhaps some rather more rude comments . think of it when they are sanding the bonnet down and words start appearing ,, one hopes it is an owner doing work rather than a hired out job,,
look forward to that posting here ,, in future..

DPO

dedicated prior owner

RIGHT

2025 eh ,, what a complement from you to think that this surface will last 15 years..or me . maybe i will go a hundred if i can get 90 grams of single malt EVERY DAY

here is a pic .. you see 320 grit scratches and a flat on the featherfill high build surfacer primer , lots of not flat//

just pushing the block ole buddy// need to push some more

sure wish i could get the school trained guy to visit , drink beer whiskey wine , throw darts .. shoot the Sh!t ..
i am learning all .. on the fly.. with no advice except from you and that is quite questionable

i wanted to get this local boyo to buy the best turbine sprayer [ gosh , i could help him with the cost for interest]\

then put addys up

Since the post has pretty much degraded to nothing ,I'll jump in. If 3/4 of a litre of wine, or 9 shots willl reduce your heart attack risk by 54% ,why not do both and be risk free?
I used to be a sevice manager for Electrolux and always answered the phone "nothing sucks like Electrolux" . I guess I'll need to rethink that after seeing the paint gun add on . Maybe nothing blows like electrolux?

Actually I thought the topic was going well.

All could look in and see what a butcherous job was being done and trying to keep a bit of humour to the subject and the poor recipient car in question.
