Has anyone replaced their cigarette lighter with one from a local auto parts store? I have a 1974 chrome bumper MBG. What type can I use?

On a different note: Can anyone recommend a brand and color of spray paint that I can use on my radio console? I am trying to stay original... Can I find the paint at a local auto parts store or should I go to an automotive paint shop? I am guessing some sort of flat black plastic spray paint..

Lighters are pretty well universal and most any of them will fit most any socket. I've bought them in stores, gotten unused ones out of junk cars, and never had a problem with any of them.

Plasti-Cote makes vinyl spray. That's the best type stuff to use on interior vinyl and plastic.

There was a brand of spray dye/finish that I have used in the past but cannot remember the details. The brand was New York Copper or something similar. They had a complete line of odd finishes that no one else made. I'm sure JDW will remember the name

I don't think I've heard of that outfit, but vinyl spray holds real good. Many of the interior panels on new cars are sprayed to match the interior colors right from the factory. You learn that when you clean them with the wrong stuff. Don't ask how I know, but it wasn't my car, it was my company truck.

NYCCO was the brand. Cannot find it doing a web search, though. A auto body supply shop should be able to sell you what you need and tell you just what to do to make it stick. Prep work is critical. Armourall and silicone are your worst enemies

Sure that wasn't NYBCO? They no longer exist, bought out by, I think, Krylon a year or two ago.

Yep, that's it, John, New York Brass Company

OK, I did know the outfit, but only the short form name. Still not a big deal, their vinyl sparay was just like anybody elce's, but they did have some neat products, I used their spray stainless steel a lot of places on my car. Yeah, they're gonners, Krylon now and they dropped a lot of the good stuff out of the line-up.

Krylon has been advertising a paint for plastics here in the east. Probably has some sort of flex agent in it as they state it won't peel. Also Dupli-Color offers a vinyl spray in either black or tan.

SEM paints for vinyl and plastic are excellent. Most body shop supply places have it.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the knowledge! Why did Gerry say ArmourAll and Silicone were your wost enemies?

Thanks,

Chris Tyler

Armor All has been noted to dry things out. Once you start using it, you have to continue using it.

I'ved used Black Magic and have been happy with it. My only complaint is it's a magnet for dust collection (most shiner's are).

The Krylon stuff is called "Fusion." They've been advertising it on Speed and TNN during all the car shows (i.e. Trucks, Car & Driver, Two Guy's Garage, etc.).

You have to have it all off before you paint!!!

New paint won't stick to surfaces with silicone or armourall in them.

It is also very difficult to prep a surface that has had ArmorAll or silicone so it will hold paint. You'll know it right off the bat, the coating will fisheye like crazy as soon as it hits. You'll Never find any of either of those products in a body shop. When I was selling parts many times I'd carry a "show & tell" item with me, but never take a spray can of silicone into a body shop, man, there would be hell to pay if you ever did.

SEM makes a good product also.
