Hi folks
I have dirty underparts and looking under my motor there is the usual oil and road crud.
I was thinking of setting to cleaning it and wondererd what the preferred forum method is ?
I thought that I might liberally coat the parts with swarfeaga or the like, leave it a bit and give it a good scrub and wash down ? Seems safe, reasonably cheap and it shifts oil.
Good idea ? What do you lot do to clean your underparts :-)
Cheers all
Carl

Simple Green and a power washer :) Or PowerBall. The engine in my samurai is so clean I eat off it. Yes, I DO eat off it. I cooked baked totoes on that SOB when I wheeled up 4 Peaks.
Congratulations on buying a GT - wise man!
I'd just power-wash the underside to get rid of all the road dirt that holds moisture. I guess you could use 'Gunk degreaser' to remove any oil etc (I put in into a spray bottle, then hose it off).
But, oil on the *underside* of the car is no bad thing. Helps stop rust!! You may want to clean the engine bay and make that all clean, but that's a different matter. For the underneath, the main thing is to keep it clean - esp. at all the extremities (e.g. wheel arches, valences etc). Those bits don't get much engine heat or oil drips, so are way more liable to rust. Rust is the GT's real enemy!
Good luck with your clutch problem. Unfortunately, these things happen. You can justify it all by reminding yourself that you bought the car for the longer term. No doubt a few more things will go over the next months, but soon everything will settle down. Preventive maintenance is the key! Along with waxoyl!
Happy motoring

You need to find a copy of this book....Manifold Destiny.
It's out of print...but has some tasty recipes...
I agree on Simple Green. It's amazing stuff and doesn't leave that horrible after-smell that Gunk does.
It also doesn't leave a disgusting stinky foamy slick running down the driveway.
I understand it's biodegradable although of course all of the oil, grease and other noxious crap it washes off isn't.
Simple Green is great. I also used some purple stuff... Purple Power?? I sprayed it on and let it set the required length of time then used my power washer to spray it off.
I used the purple stuff on the greasiest, thickest build up and Simple Green on the stuff that was just dirty. It went a lot quicker than I thought and was much easier.

And once your done cleaning it, you'll be able to see where the oil leaks are.
Try out the Simple Green. I used it on my Dodge with a garden hose attatchment, cleaned THICK grease and oil off. Dont dilute it with the water, just use the concentrate crap in the spray bottle.
And yes, simple green is biodegradable, and its so good at what it does, movie theatres use it to clean the projectors.
I thought about using a steam cleaner, but will rent a power washer with electric hot water heater to clean everything I can
Not recommended. Use cleaner and a garden hose. Hit an engine like that with a power washer, and then take it apart that weekend.
Your going to spray water all over the place with high pressure, and it will creep into your plug wires, and probably in your carb. I had it get into my spark plug wires and I had to put my Zuk in the sun for an hour watiting for the water to dry of the wires and plugs so I could start it and go home.
I would recommend against the powerwasher as noted, plus you may blow paint and undercoating off.
I prefer the simple green type stuff to the gunk. The gunk leaves a film that's harder to get off than the grease :(
