Since I'm prepping the 77 for sale, (and after I remove the beloved OD) from the car and implant it into my shiny Red 79 B -- I got some advice from my brother, (nutman79)...to use Brasso to clean the rear fogged (brown) plastic window on the soft top...let me tell you - that $hit works! Try it! The rag was brown and then I used a clean rag to wipe off the residue and man -- amazingly clear! Try it! I couldn't even see through the rear window - just a fadded brown mass, no more!

I like a man who gets real excited over a clear rear window!

Brasso, eh? Neat idea. I wonder if it scratches, though? It's for pots and pans, right?

Good tip, scratches are better than brown crud. Polish with some Maguires and it may be good as new!

No Shit! That is cool. No Drew, you are thinking of Brillo. Brasso is a metal polish and anyone who has been in the military knows Brasso, especially the Navy. I knew of Brasso when I was 13 years old. That's when I started Navy Military school, Admiral Farragut Academy, then on to the US Navy. The smell brings back many memories. Captain JD Weimer,USN is still making me polish the brass.(Hey, he's MUCH older and outranks me.)

Use PLAST-X. Meguires I think. It's out in the garage and I'm too lazy to go look. It's made for this application and works as advertised.
Save the Brasso for your tunic buttons, belt buckle, and hat badge.
I also used Brasso and Silvo to polish out imperfections on the paint work of my plastic models when I was a kid. Brasso for the rough work and Silvo for the fine polish.
Also used Silvo to polish up grungy guitar strings when I couldn't afford new strings. Dab of Silvo on a rag, pinch the detuned string and rub up and down until it's as shiny as a new one.
Haven't done that since I was 17 or so.

Kit Scratchout clear coat and swirl remover polish ($2 at Walmart) works great too. I used it on the rear windows, as well as turntable covers, CDs, and tail light lenses.

I have had great success over the last 15 years removing scratches and other surface imperfections in plastics using Novus Plastic polishes. They're made for the job and the #2 and #3 scratch removers are very very good. Here's a site that features them...

I've tried the plastic polishes but they would'nt remove the brown stains, I'll try the brasso.

I'll try these remedies on my '58 MGA and provide before and after pics. I'm glad I found this thread, I thought about buying a whole new top due to this. The rest of the top is in excellent condition.

I'll check back with pics and results.

JB, Let me tell you - the moment I applied the Brasso to my badly browned out window - the rag was brown with the oxidation it removed instantly with the Brasso. The plastic window since hasn't degraded because of the Brasso. I intend to apply more today.

It really works.
