MGB: clutch problem

Had my 1500 Midget out for a short (1hr.) ride last Sun. THIS CAR IS A BLAST TO DRIVE!
Oh yeah, the clutch problem. By the time I was almost back home, I had a very hard time getting it into gear. The clutch will not disengage. When I got back, I checked the fluid in the clutch master. Yep, you guessed it, almost empty. Well, not almost, you might say it WAS empty; but I don't want to admit it. OK, so I'm an idiot. I guess I have not checked it in a while. I did'nt see any fluid on the floor in the garage, so I'm guessing it only leaks when I step on the pedal when driving. Back to the problem. I filled the master and that did'nt help. I'm going to have to find out where the leak is and fix that, and then bleed the system. I hope that will solve my clutch problem. I have never done this on a LBC before. I'm not sure, but I think the clutch slave is on the driver's side (left for all of us in the USA) of the trans. Can I get to it from under the car? Is it easy to get to, or am I going to have to take a Yoga lesson first? I wonder if there is anything special I need to do, or is it the same as bleeding a brake system. Any suggestions will be a great help, like I said, I never did this before. I guess I'll plan on spending most, if not all of my next day off of work throwing wrenches around and swearing as I try to fix the problem.
Oh yeah, did I say how much this car is A BLAST TO DRIVE!! Makes the broken knuckles, and grease all over me easy to forget.

My guess would be either a cracked line, or a worn slave cylinder. I've dealt with both, and they're not that bad. You're right. The slave cylinder is accessible from the bottom of the car, near the back drivers' side of the engine.

I'm a skinny guy and was able to just shimmy underneath to get at everything, but had real trouble taking deep breaths when someone got into the car to help bleed the system. Definitely use a set of ramps for this one.

Its pretty much like bleeding a brake system, so take a flashlight, flare wrench, and small length of rubber tubing with you when you squeeze under. I noticed that the slave cylinder on the 1500 seems to have a habit of holding onto its last big air bubble, so I'd be interested to know if anyone else has a trick I didn't figure out. An eezibleed-like system might help but I didn't have one at the time.

Also, remember that the master cylinder reservoir doesn't hold much, so keep a real close eye on the level.

Hey, thanks Ryan. I have not had a chance to crawl under it yet, and I was'nt sure how accesible the bleed on the slave is. I'll put my son inside the car to help, he's pretty skinny.
Thanks again, Charlie

I also dealt with this recently with my 1500. One of the things that I did was to order and replace the hydraulic fluid line from the MC to the slave. I think the new one was about $22. Someone had told me that as the original line aged, it also flexed when clutch fluid was compressed.
Yes, the slave is a tight squeeze, I used a set of ramps. I emptied all the old fluid out by having my wife pump the clutch and adding more new fluid to the MC. When it ran clean, I installed the new line which was made of a better material than the original. Yes, it was a huge mess. Hydraulic fluid in my hair, face...ugly.
I used the clear hose trick in a clear glass to bleed the line. The problem I ran into was that the MC res. is small and you can bleed it to air very easily. I finally got it bled with much swearing under the f...n car.

on pre 1500 cars it is hard to get the air out unless you poer blead it
one trick is to unblot the master cyl and tilt the thing up toward the line and hand work the plunger otherwise the air will get stuck going up hill in the line also fully realese the pedel to get past the chamber in the cyl. when foot pumping it the trick is to get the master cyl higher than the line.
my mech neighbor taught me this last month on the 69 i just bought
7 yrs ago i pumped the 67 over 100 times literly before it truly bled wish i had knowen the tricks i just mentioned back then back then.

Hey, thanks for the input guys. I bled the system and for now all seems good, no problem getting into gear. The only problem is, I did'nt find a leak. My guess is that Ryan or John may have the answer. The line is flexing and or leaking somewhere "down there " where I can't see it. Its a cheap part so I think I'll replace the plastic hydraulic line. My bet is that will fix the leak.
Thanks again .
