Can anyone please tell me the dimensions or size... of the bolts holding the clutch slave cylinder on my 73 mkIII. My clutch went out the other day, come to find out this whole time only the lower bolt was holding it on, it pivoted and caused all the fluid to leak out. The mg is my only transportaion now other wise id just bring the bolt down to the hardware store. Thanks.

IT is a 3/8 UNC bolt either an inch or inch & a quarter long & it is fitted with a lock washer( spring washer to some) hope that helps,Mick B.

As stated 3/8 course about a inch long. Here's a old Spridget racers trick, you know how the upper slave cylinder bolt is a mother to get to, what Spridget racers do with the upper eye on the slave cylinder to cut the end of the eye, so it looks more like a C now and is open at the end, you can now start the bolt in get it to the point where you can just barely slip the upper, now modified ear mount, now you have far less tightening to do to get it tight and you don't have to deal with the fuss of getting the bolt started with the closed eye. The factory should have done this to begin with, but automotove engineers seldomly ever have to work on what they have designed.

Hell, they'll love it, if they ever have to change it :)

Hap,

I just leave the slave cylinder bolted up to the gearbox until I've got the engine hanging from the hook, then unbolt it. That and a remote bleeder hose, and it's a piece of cake to deal with.

Much easier not to have to re-bleed the clutch every time you pull a motor tho' Karl................especially if you're a racer and pull motors a bit more often than the average.

Did you sell your race car?

My car has an axcess cover to allow you to get to the top bolt. That is how I got it out when I pulled the engine. I would assume that I would put it in the same way.

Hello Everyone,

Please excuse my ignorance but I don't understand the following procedure and I am not a mechanic. "what Spridget racers do with the upper eye on the slave cylinder to cut the end of the eye, so it looks more like a C"

I have been under the car and I am leaking fluid from the slave. What is interesting is the ribber cover is cracked and goes back and for with the shaft. I am guessing this is not supposed to happen??? Also when I take the bolt off of the plunger, the whole plunger just falls out onto the floor. Is supposed to be like this? Is it supposed to be that loose fitting?

I have not done any work on the slave in my life but I am pretty sure it needs to come out and get re built as it looks very original. I tried bleeding it and that was not that difficult but that did not help my clutch issues.

The problem that I see is getting the slave out (top bolt) with out pulling the engine and tranny and I DON"T WANT TO DO THAT!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ian

Ian, you can get the top bolt out of the slave ctylinder without pulling the engine or tranny, it's a PITA, but do-able, hence the mod I entioned above to cut the end out of the upper close eye mount for the top bolt in the slave cylinder. Now this mod won't help to get out the slave cylinder lout the car this time, but it can be done, I had to do many times, but when you repalce or rebuild your slave cylinder, then you can make the upper ey open on the end, so you can start the uppet bolt in the htreaded hole in the tranny, and get it to just the point before it snugs, then slip the modded slave cylinder with the open upp ey mount on the already started bolt, so that you don't have to turn it much to finish tightening it. Onec you get your slave cylinder out, and look at it, it will all make sence to you.

Hello Hap,

Thanks for the explanation and I fully understand what you mean now. Any suggestions on how to get that top bolt out the first time?

Regards,

Ian
