MGB: CMA Awards

Doris is watching the CMA Awards on TV. Seems to me they are on about once a month; some kind of awards for country artists anyway. I have yet to hear a country singer tonight, I think there isn't such a thing any more. It's more like they are Rock & Roll artists without enough imagination to make it in that category so they tame the drummer, twang or yodel a little, say woa-man instead of woman, and call it country.

Still can't get used to the Eagles being considered country....their music hasn't changed that much from Hotel California.

Didn't know you were a country music expert John. You have it pegged as to what Nashville calls country. I call it pop music sung by people with southern accents.

Gimme some Hank Snow, Lefty Frezell, Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubb, Merl Haggard, Walen & Willie and the boys. If you're gonna call it country you gotta have a fiddle in the band, or a steel guitar. Or both.

Brian, I believe my all time favorite song is the old 1988 Rebel Yell by Bill Idol. You can take it from there for the kind of music I like.

X3...I have to admit I never got Johnny Cash till my father passed away.

Some of his lyrics are borderline poetic.

Now, like Ryan, and others, I like a lot.

Kid Rock and HanK Jr. can make some nice music. Kid Rock just happens to know where and how to make the most money. His songs with Sheryl Crow, Bob Seger - all good stuff.

Johnny Cash singing Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt' is a haunting.

I wasn't being funny. I like what's being put into a song more than the type of music it is. Another favorite of mine is "Reconsider Me" by a local artist named Narvel Felts. He put more into that piece than anybody else ever did or ever will. Narvel was a great singer but never was able to break into the bigtime. Poke around on the web and you can probably hear this song. Freddie King was my favorite blues man. Bonnie Ratt and Tina Turner are at the top of my list. Jim Morrison had a voice to rival Sinatra but Jim was stupid and killed himself with dope.

I'm not totally stuck on any one type of music. Just about every segment of it has something about it I like. EXCEPT RAPPERS.

JDW,
Narvel Felts is still out there singing and playing. We saw him at Lincoln Center a couple of years ago with a bunch of other rockabilly acts. We had gone to see our friend Rosie Flores who was also on the bill. I wasn't familiar with him but Rosie was raving about him before the show and she was right. He was one of the best parts of the show.

Here's a couple of videos of him playing around your town and one of him from just last month:

What really gets me is those stupid ass looking big cowboy hats so many of the country guys wear. Who do they think they're shitin? Most of 'em wouldn't know the business end of a steer if ya stuck it right in front of their nose! :eyeroll:

JDW sure has if right, though, about RAPPERS - God, do they suck!

Disco you ask? BeeGees Stayin' Alive is hard to beat.

My Sirius radio in the B stays tuned to "Blues 74", some of which I don't really think of as blues music ("Chicago" blues is a tad different form Southern blues). A lot of what they play is similar to early (pre-Beatles) rock'n'roll. And others border on heavy metal. But most of it is pretty good stuff.

When I'm in the truck, it's bluegrass on WNCW-FM or early (50s, 60s) rock for the most part.

JDW, (and others) you ever try Cross Canadian Ragweed? They are kind of in that caught between country & rock type bands. A friend turned m eon to them a while back and I though they have a pretty good thing going...

Hey there're some great traditional country singers still out there .... George Strait, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, George Jones still around? I know Merle Haggard is, and his doc said his prognosis is good.

Oh, and Shania's back .... I don't care if her stuff is country or not, she's back and that's what's important!
