1979 MGB coil gets extremely hot to the touch and car misses. Voltage 10.5 one side and 7.5 on the other side. The miss is obviously caused be overheated coil. Why is the coil overheating.

7.5 volts on the minus post is about right and they all get hot. If some of the oil leaked out it will get too hot, break down under the heat, and cause a miss. If it's the original coil being 24 years old could have something to do with it.
John: If that worries you, then just replace it. It doesn't necessarily mean that your car is falling apart. It may mean that the coil is failing. They are cheap enough to replace rather than worry. After you replace the coil and the problem persists, THEN you can worry! AL Bradley
Sorry John ,I connected to the wrong link....the answer to your question is above ...a couple ..
Better than what, John? Lucas coils are probably optimum, but more expensive. You can go to your local auto parts store, buy a coil for your car and have it in place in no time at all. If that solves the problem, then leave it alone! If it doesn't, list the symptoms and somebody here can help you. That's what these folks are very good at. Try us and see! AL Bradley
Lucas coils have one diameter, other coils may have another. If you are concerned wit h a stock mount, stick with Lucas if for no other reason.
By the way, have you put in a pointless ignition system recently in a car without ballast?
