I have a 1980 model MGB, with CEI. I want to run a compression test on the engine, adjust the valves, then run another compression test when I'm done. I've grounded the coil wire to the block. Do I have to disable the CEI as well? I would hate to fry the system running the test.

I would just disconect the coil and the CEI at the plug.. Never new anything about grounding the coil...

Ya just pull the coil wire. You're not hooking anything to the ignition system for a compressionn test, RIGHT??

I just did my 80 today. Disconnected coil wire and the EI wire. Didn't ground anything. Numbers were 150, 145, 148, 150. Dry. Wanted to adjust the valves, but ran out of steam. There's always manana.

My compression numbers weren't as high as yours. They were 135, 120, 120, 130, dry. I had a major oil leak at the back of the valve cover, and had to take it apart anyway to change the gasket. While I was into it, I adjusted the valves. They were close to right anyway, so the compression numbers didn't change.

That's not a stock 80 engine - someone has rebuilt it with HC pistons (or it came from the UK)! :) Congrats on the engine find, btw.

The post below has the correct numbers for a LC engine.

My PO told me he owned the car about 14 months and put 1,000 miles on it. He said he bought it from a pilot who did the rebuild and partial restoration. I have an old address for the P-PO, so I am going to try to find out what exactly I have, and when it was done. My PO had none of the records.
