I have a 3.4 L V6 out of a 04 Grand AM and don't have a computer for it. I have a cousin that has a 1999 Grand Am that has 3.1 engine in it. Does anyone know if this computer will work in my conversion. I am doing the Dan Wade's conversion from Ohio.
Please let me know any information you can provide will be great.

Michael,
The ECM would probably run it but I can think of a few issues. IIRC the 3400 has slightly higher injector flow rates and will most likely make the engine run rich. The ECM may not function properly with a manual transmission since it was programmed for an automatic. The final issue will be disabling the anti theft system.

Michael

I had a similar issue with the 2003 Alero 3400 that I was using. Anit-theft is an issue. Check out this thread where I detailed my solutions.

There are GM chip 'tuner' types who can disable the antitheft code by re flashing the chip in the ECU. Antitheft aside, in principle, the ecu will 'learn' the car and, while it might initially run a little poorly, it will self correct. Of course, if you then have the battery go dead (or disconnect the battery from the ecu), it will revert to the default ve table and have to relearn the motor. There is some very interesting reading about the various GM ecu's if you have time and the inclination...

in my case I found out that that is not as easily accomplished with the late model ECU's ('03 & up) such as Michael is dealing with. After talking with Sinister Performance ( http://www.gmtuners.com ) they knew of no software that would successfully disable the ant-theft system on a late model ECU that came with it enabled.

If you know of someone who has successfully accomplished doing this could you provide contact information? It would be a great point of reference.

It is entirely possible I am mistaken, since this is not my area of expertise. The expert I'd recommend is

Brendan at http://lt1swap.com. His email is lt1swap@centurytel.net.

Incidently, take a look at his website for

(I plan on getting good at reprogramming the GM ecu's for the v6 applications (esp the TBI and RWD ecu's) but haven't got started yet.

The issue appears to be with those units that have associated body control modules. I ended up with a Voyager ECU for my LA1 engine. That configuration didn't have a BCM and it is a relatively simple drop-in.. There were a few wire positions swapped in the connector cable housing and a few more deleted entirely.

Michael, just a footnote on terminology to prevent future confusion for you.

You don't have a 3.4 engine from a Grand Am. There is no such thing. You have a totally different series with alloy heads and they are called '3400'. The 3.4 label is used only on the cast iron headed engines which were last used in (I think) 1994.

There have been a number of reports of people using the ecu's for RWD motors ( called 2.8, 3.1, 3.4 ) on FWD motors (called 3100, 3400, etc) and vice versa.

Mike,

You might want to try Ecology auto at 320 N. 27th ave. 27th ave, South of I-10 in Phoenix. They have so many newer choices of vehicles down there, that you may find an exact match for just a little money. I have found affordable parts down there many times.

Also for anyone who may need it, I saw a 94 or 95 Pontiac Firebird down there last week, with a 3.4 SFI and a 5 speed
