I have a tiny hole in my convertible top. On the way to put the car away for winter I noticed that it is starting to get larger, still quite small. The wind seemed to get under it and starting a tear. What product or procedure do members of the forum use to repair something like this.

thanks,
brdave

On my previous B, a 77, I used scrap vinyl to patch small holes/tears on the admittedly old hood. I'd cut a piece to size and spread a paper thin layer of fast-set expoxy adhesive before positioning said vinyl in place, over the tear, on the inside of the hood. I'd then use C clamps and small pieces of plywood (also cut to size for this job) to compress the repair patch overnight. This methodology seemed to work well enough.

I put clear plastic tape on the outside then filled with Ultra-Black RTV from the inside. After it dries a few days remove the tape on the outside. Worked for several years until I replaced the top.

Rips/holes can be patched, but the best repair is to have an auto upholstery shop take off the top and sew in a patch. If you want a cheap fix, though, either of the above methods may work well enough. I had an older top on my car (since replaced) where the previous owner had used some kind of rubberized liquid/goop to seal a smallish tear. Maybe it was the RTV mentioned above. It held well for the few years I used that convertible top, so I guess it works.

I had our local cobbler (shoe repair) person repair the rip in my top. She used an super adhesive to attach a patch on the underside, then some miracle goop to fill in the tear from the top. Worked great. Also repaired a spot on the dash where a dime sized piece of vinyl was missing. Both repairs are almost invisible.
