My starter is super weak and doesnt start anymore since its gotten colder, but if I push start it, it fires right away. Is there a way to bypass the starter and fire the motor without the dang thing?

Welcome back, Christian. :)

They can be rebuilt, or you can get an already-rebuilt starter from the usual suspects.

Or, you can replace it with a modern, gear-reduction starter. Get that from the usual suspects, too. Some folks don't like 'em because they make the car sound like a ricer or a Ford or something starting up. I'm ambivalent. I've used both, and in good condition, both work okay.

You sure it's not the battery?

Positive. Its a brand new battery. My dad said its me not using the choke, but the starter wouldnt stop and click and then crank slowly again.

Is there a way to do it WITHOUT spending more money on this car? I just want it gone already and I dont feel like putting more money in it, its not worth it.

check the terminals on your starter-they do break and progressively make starting hard..until not starting at all

x2 on that.

Still sounds like battery, and if the battery's new the terminals and cables are the first place to check.

Terminals are fine. The positive and negatives were replaced with the wiring in the car because the negative isnt black, its the aftermarket super thick crap with the clear coating, and the positive is a long black wire.

Ill check the connections on the starter when there is light.

and its the desert, the nights get cold and the days stay hot as heck.

Check the engine ground strap too. It's over near the left engine mount (at least that's where it is on a chrome bumper car).

It's probably just the brushes on the starter motor - I got replacement brushes from VB many years ago, and they're still working fine. I think they were less than $10.

Bypassing the starter can be done in either one of two ways.

You can hire four college guys or ten college girls to accompany you on all trips and act as "push starters" when you want to get going.

The other method involves cutting a hole in the grill and radiator and the replacement of the big bolt in the center of the crankshaft pulley with one out of an MGTD or a Triumph. Those bolts had "one way" ears on them that accepted the business end of a hand crank. Hand cranking is a lost art, but if I recall correctly it is important to use your arm in a fully locked position to push down on the handle and hope for a backfire. In extreme circumstances you might want to squat low as you straddle the crank with your legs and use that postion to slow the grip part of the handle when it flies back and upward when the tool and the crank disengage.

Either one of these methods will be impressive to a prospective buyer.

The other alternative of course is to repair your starter.

Hope this helps.;)

I think that 10 college girls would definitely interest me more than 4 college guys.

Otherwise, the hand crank would be literally awesome. I would love to do that mod even though my starter works fine... only my radiator is in the way. :( I suspect this would also eliminate my woman from ever asking to drive it again, especially when cold. :)

Forget doing the crank thingy Bean. This will solve all your problems, even when it gets real cold:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/AutoAccessories/RemoteCarStarters/PRD~0340745P/LCD%252BRemote%252BStarter%252Band%252BKeyless%252BEntry%252BRemote.jsp?locale=en

I believe it bypasses the current Lucas starters we have in the cars. Hit up your nearest Canadian Tire store

Just don't leave it in gear when you park it.

His starter is still gonna go clickey-click, ya know....

Of course it will but at least he won't be out tearing his rotator cuff trying to crank the dang thing over. 8-) Sheesh!!!

My dad told me that he knew a guy that broke his arm!

I've got another suggestion - how about instead of a hand crank, mount a propeller on the front. You'll still have to deal with the radiator problem, BUT, you can get it started, and increase speed at the same time. And think of the added cooling!!!

Heh. Well, if he follows Jack's advice it won't be his rotator he should worry about! ::o

The bad news is that starters are more complicated than water pumps.

They're not required on water pumps either, you just top the radiator up every couple of hours..........
