Is there any difference between a 1973 cross member and a 1976 crossmember?

I have a '76 B that I may want to lower some day and there is a '73 crossmember on ebay right now. Just wondering if it is a good thing to have when lowering time gets here. Seems I remember reading that a CB crossmember is a good thing to have when lowering a RB B.

It is the quintessentially best way to lower a B in the front.

I have been and will to continue to be going through my project with exactly that method.

That is an excellent price too, unless it is a rusted hulk internally. If you have all the other components, brakes, springs, etc. I'd say therefore to jump on it. I bought my crossmember, which needed serious reconditioning; for 100.00. But it had everything else on it as well, including GT springs.

I'm wondering if that is really a CB crossmember. I'm looking at Lindsay Porters book right now and it sure looks like a RB unit. He has them both side by side in a picture. Double check with the seller to be sure.

Good point. It sure looks like the one on my '76, but then again I have no idea what the differences are.

Thanks for the info everyone!

The mounting points on the RB crossmember are raised when compared to the CB unit and the steering rack mountings are in a different position although you can't see them in that ebay picture. The RB mounting points in the picture I'm looking at look about level with the shock mounting points....the same as the ebay picture. The mounting points on the CB crossmember looks lower than the shock mounting points.

That is not a Cb X-member!

THAT X-MEMBER PICTURED IS NOT A CB X-MEMBER

Hunts, Scott,

Thanks! You just saved me $20 for a crossmember I can't use and no telling how much for shipping.

Thanks again. Maybe I will have better luck next time.

I'm kinda late to this thread, but I have a question. Wouldn't you have to make some changes to the rack mounts on a cb crossmember to use it in a rb car? I know the mounts on a cb are at a steeper angle, and you couldn't just use a cb rack as the pinion shaft is significantly shorter. Just wondering what you do. I'm using a rb rack on a cb crossmember in my v8 car, and I had to cut the rack mounts off the crossmember and re-weld them back on at a shallower angle.
