Can an unknown cam be set up to optimize performance..
My first rebuild on an MG engine I bought the cam from proper MG.. As I recall the called it a 264 cam and it was said to be just a tad bit hotter than stock.. But that was 10 years back and I can't find any info on it and of course proper MG is no longer around....

I'm guessing you do not know the manufacturer of the cam.
Well I think there is, but it will require you to spend a little money. You could buy a vernier cam gear, insert a compression gauge, and look for optimum cylinder pressure. But there could be a lesser expensive way as well.

Blake, yes. You use the lobe nose center position method and find the lobe center position for both lobes on either #1 or #4. These averaged will give you the lobe seperation angle . Then decide if you want it advanced, usually 2-4 degrees or straight up. Then set the intake lobe center position to the same value as the seperation angle for straight up or advanced, subtract the degrees advance you want from the seperation angle and that's the advanced setting for the intake lobe center position.

Example: for a 108* seperation angle, set the intake at 108* ATDC for straight up, or 104* ATDC for 4* advanced.

As Dave said, but be careful as the ATDC for the inlet fully open position is crankshaft degrees and lobe center is in camshaft degrees.

For purpose of clarification, the example given is crankshaft degrees. A cam with a 108* lobe seperation angle would show up as 216* at the crank. Exhaust 108* BTDC plus intake at 108* ATDC.
