The diff in my 73 is howling (after the Datsun 5-speed removed the howl from the old 4-spd, the RE becomes more noticeable.)

Late last year we took it apart to replace thrust washers and everything looked normal on the ring gear and the bevel gears, so it seems very unlikely that there's any kind of failure coming up. Just noise.

I'm using Mobil 1 diff lube, 90 wt, and thinking about draining some and refilling with 140 (to get a vaule in-between the two).

Or is there an additive that can reduce the noise?

I'm using Lucas Oil treatment in the differential. It quiets it a bit and can be mixed with gear lube.

you mean the thrust washers? we used the std repolacements.

we did not remove the pinion gear since that's a bigger task than what we'd laid out time to complete.

Try Slick 50 MTL.

Maybe Power Punch? My guess is you are hearing the pinion. Does it change depending on whether you are accelerating or decelerating?

mine howled on the park way...

a simple change fixed it, much to my surprise. for heck's sake, just try a change, its easy enough...

For our benefit, what simple change did you make? If you mean lubricants I have tried all types and I still have some gear whine.

Is it really gear whine, or a bearing whine?

I'm almost sure mine is a gear whine, it's not bad and has been about the same for more than 8 years since I bought the car. I thinks bearings would have totally failed in that length of time.
