Mr. Barry

My alt. light was not going out, and the battery was not charging, so I decided to replace the alternator, with a used one.(no one in this area can test a Lucas alt.)..After cleaning up the used one, I got ready to tighten the nut onto the shaft, and realized that it wouldn't go on...It would easily go on the alt. I took off the car.
I did determine, after a lot of aggravation , that the nut and shaft thread were 1/4 -18 Pipe, on my "old" alt....
Finally solved the problem by rethreading the "new" alt. shaft, so I could reuse the nut...BUT, that leads me to my question...Were the threads just bunged up, or were they different on the two alternators?...The fan, and pulley fit fine.
