As a Kid the one thing that made me fall for the MG was its interior unlike any other vehicle interior I had ever seen, among (other things). At the time I really thought the map light in the console was cool..! Fast forward many years later. I finally own a B of my own and the map light location is not so cool. The light just lights up the shift console that about it and you would have to get your map close to it to see anything. Anyway my idea is to mount a light under the mirror this might work better or even floor lights?
Ideas...?

There are aftermarket cigar plug units that actually work as map lights. Go on line or look at the corner parts stores. Foot lights would be good if you have that kind of fettish  but as reading maps not too good me thinks :D:
Your on your own about a mirror light...I think it would blind your rear view and be disrupting to oncoming traffic...think about the removable and somewhat portable cigar lighter plug in....
Footwell lights are easy to do and are pretty nice if you happen to drop something down there. I'd just take a walk through the local pick a part and find some from a late model car and mount them up under the edge of the dash where they don't show and are out of the way. Anything mounted higher does run the risk of causing unwanted reflections in the glass and might be a problem if they were on when driving. With the quality of modern LED battery powered lights those look like the way to go for a map light. Something like this little item from HF might do the trick as you could store it easliy when not in use. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66485
I guess now that the clocks changed evryone needs some form of interior illumination. Lots of posts about the subject in general (including one by me as well as participation in another) (dome lights, map lights door switches etc)
I'm with Robert on this one. I use of those snake like map lights that plug into the cigarette lighter. I found one at TJ Maxx for like $5. They're very versatile. You can bend / point it wherever you need light. Sort of like a portable drop lamp.
Although a little pricey new, I'm putting in map lights out of an A for foot well lights. They are fairly small and rounded which won't hook anyone's clothing, handbags, etc. Others in the past have shared the lights that they have used as well and I hope that will chime in as well.
Cheap I know but I have one of those stick on tap lights on the headliner of the GT. It works great and it cost me about $2.
Well Carl, it wasn't me who called you cheap!
But I suspect a plethora of devices for a hard top which simply aren't practicle for a flip top. And, I must add, while there could be practicle application of foot well lamps for illumination beyond foot fetish, I really don't understand how you could read a map or use it other than for its intended illumination placement.
I would offer that the LCD and or neon under the car lamps provide a light source but not germaine to the issue and question at hand....:eyepop:
I was considering adding one of these to each foot well.

I think this is a great idea, although it's much easier to do on a GT than on a convertible.
OEM rear view mirrors with integral map lights are dirt cheap at your local junkyard.
Here's the Chevy S10 mirror/light I installed in my GT. It's mounted to my rollcage.

Now there's an understatement
Can't tell if your car is a GT or a roadster. Please update your avatar. :-)
But if it is a GT go find an overhead console in an Outback in a junk yard and install it. Two push button lamps and a cubby. Nearly a perfect curvature..
I want a GT just so I can put one of these in one.

I went down to my local radio shack and picked up some small screw type bases and lamps. Found a hot lead under the dash, fused them up and even added a switch in the door (66's didn't have em) so when I open the door the foot wells have light. I then found a simple $6 lamp wired up a toggle switch on the side of the speaker console and mounted the lamp in the middle of dash just above the console. I have all the light I need. Pm me if you'd like to see some pics.
You could probably run the wires through the windshield frame - if you're willing to take the windshield out!
In addition to the above, get a hotrod mag like Street Rodder. Their ads are full of places selling interior lighting components.
Well here in Southern California if you are not out past 4 am you can get all you need from either moonlight, or from the City of Lights! Easy on the pocketbook and easy on the alternator! Past 4 AM here you might occasionally encounter a marine layer that diffracts but also diminishes the moonlight. Then perhaps you can use a mini-mag lite!
