Ok, this seems a bit too simple http://www.eastwood.com/workshop. The claim is that anyone port and polish a head. Has anyone done this? From the sounds you probably are not porting, but just polishing. Would that be worth the effort?

Anyone can port and polish a head . The trick is to improve flow and do all the ports the same. It takes part artist part engineer to consistantly do it well.
Yes I have and if you work at it for awhile you can remove material from the ports and combustion chamber. Stones and rotary files are quicker but faster to make a mistake with also. I followed the guidelines in Peter Burgess's book "How to Power Tune MGB 4-Cylinder Engines" and I am happy with what I did. I have no before and after comparisons as we barely drove the car between the time we bought it and tearing it apart for a complete redo. This work does create a lot of mess between abrasive dust and metal filings so be sure to do it away from things that you don't want to get dirty.
