MGB: Engine Cleanup

Any advice on easiest way to clean up the engine for re-painting?
There is very little oil leakage present, just old paint & rust issues.
Too heavy to take it to have professionally cleaned so just want to do it myself.
Engine ran good prior to removal & had good compression so not planning on a rebuild at this time.

Does anyone have the engine paint code?

Thanks.

Bill.

I used Dawn dishsoap and a green scotchbrite pad with hot water. Moss engine paint with duplocolor clear coat so it won't stain.

Did you use any primer under the Moss engine paint?

No primer was used based from others on this board.

TSP
Laundry soap flakes mixed in water for a paste and left to "work",....in the sun is better.
More aggresive and more dangerous is something like easy off oven cleaner...keep in mind it is lye based and would cause caustic burns to skin or eyes.

I always had good results with "Simple Green" cleaner or "Holy Cow" degrease formula or if I had some bad areas Lacquer thinner used while wearing gloves.

I have used simple green too with good results. As a matter of fact it has become my choice of cleaner.

The simple green is good, I second it. You should stay away from any solvent type cleaners (paint thinner, lacquer thinner, kerosene, acetone) because the paint will not stick to the engine later unless you scrub it with the soaps after they have been used.
