Here are a couple of update pics on my rebuild progress. I've scraped all the remnants of the head gasket off the deck. I decarbonized the pistons. The bores look and feel good. I degreased the block. I pulled the timing cover and tappet covers off so I could sand them down and prime them. I'll be replacing the front main seal and timing cover gasket. The gasket was pretty well disintegrated at the bottom - probably a source of one of my oil leaks.
I still have to hit the block with a wire brush to get the loose paint off. Then I'll mask off the bay and start painting.
All the parts I need to put the engine back together have arrived. Just waiting on the head now.

all the work with the engine still in the car... more power to ya
Your making good progress, Jack the car up as high as you can and save your back. Use lots of laquer thinner and carb spray to clean things up. wire brush on a drill helps also.
Hey Jack, Brian here, Have you ever taken the MGB engine out of an MGB before?
I was wondering if all this was because you were hesitant of taking out the engine. If you can do all of that, It's not hard to go the extra quarter mile and take the whole thing out. Then you could snazzy up the engine bay area too, and spray the wole engine on an engine stand. It would probably be the same amount of time spent. And you wouldn't have to be bending over the fenders all day. An engine on a stand is an easy engine to work on.
Just my opinion, and everyone here has one.
Good Luck
Jack,
Looks like your making real progess, but I'm like Brian, I'm suprised you haven't pulled it out, considering where you're at, it's only a few more bolts and out she comes!
Looks like you are getting there. I'm glad everything looks good so far. Why did you break it apart in the first place?
And, I hate to bring up this "might as well", but how are those engine mounts. Now is the time to replace them. Believe me it is a pain once everything is back together.
I plan to replace the engine mounts - they don't look bad, but I'm not sure how old they are either.
Two things regarding pulling the engine. True, it would be easier to work on if it was out. However, I don't have an engine hoist, and even if I borrowed/rented/bought one - I don't have enough room in the garage to use it.
