MGB: Exhaust

I am thinking of running a straight pipe back to the stock rear muffler on my 1971 MGB. The speed bumps here are not MGB friendly!!!!!! Does anyone know how loud a set-up like this would be?????

What you'll have t do is make a temporary installation of the "cheater" pipe and see how it sounds. If OK clamp or weld her up and take off. If not, locate a muffler shop that can put a turbo tube in there, they're real skinny but pretty efficient.

If your rear muffler is not just a 'cherry bomb' type, it will sound fine. Most B's around here only run one muffler, and they aren't any louder than the ones with two. Kinda makes ya wonder......?

That's the setup I've got on my '78, and it's just fine - maybe a bit louder than stock, but not too much. I think some of the aftermarket systems (ANSA, Monza) have a nicer sound though, so I may switch someday when I've got a few bucks I need to squander...

Jim, I also have a 71B and I am just about done with the mechanical restoration. I bought a stock rear muffler only and plan to run a straight pipe to it. Before I had shut down this car 16 years ago, I ran two cherry bombs. I have been told that not running the front muffler causes the low frequency sound to not be muffled. From what I have heard, the rear muffler takes out the high frequency sound, and the front helps reduce the lows.

I also have a '71. I ran it without any pipe except the down pipa and also with a Monza setup. They sounded about the same to me, but what do i know, I spent 40 years in heavy industry and refuse to wear my hearing aids. Seems that a straight pipe and one muffler would sound OK.
