MGB: Exhaust System Recommendations

I would like to have a great sounding exhaust system. I am a throw back from the 60's with muscle cars. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I have 2" pipes and Flowmasters on my 3.4 L V6. They are about 4" thick if you need to figure clearance. They are reasonably quiet with a low rumble at cruising speeds (easy to have a conversation), but have a good bark at WOT. Definitely NOT ricey. See http://tinyurl.com/67n82u and scroll down ~3/4 of the way if you want to see pics.

I have the same engine, similar system, using 2 1/2" Magnaflows and it sounds like the result is the same. Reasonable around town, rorty when you get on it.

Please spare others from the racket of another noisy machine.

Get a good recording of any noisy muscle car (or mount a microphone near the tail pipe of your car) and play it into your ear phones whenever you have a need for that audio stimulus.

Most people don't need to hear your car, and some people (I am one) hate the inconsiderate noise pollution of others. Notable among motor-associated polluters are Harley Davidson screaming eagle fans and users of big amplifiers in cars. All of them think the sound they impose on others is "cool", "neat" "special",etc.

Glasspacks.

Flowmasters are not 60s or 70s sounding. To my ears, they have a raspy tone. I can always tell if a Camaro or Mustang is running Flowmasters.

Nothing like the sound of cold rolled steel Cherry Bomb header mufflers, 'cept open headers. :D

Has anyone heard Dan Master's GT running yet? I'm wondering about the sound of those chambered pipes. Should be a good sixties type sound but reasonably quiet.

They sound great! Same as Ted Lathrop's TR6 V8 & Steve Carrick's Barney. Not very quiet, though & quite heavy mufflers.

Cliff,

Have a look at Hushpower II mufflers, made by Flowmaster.
I have just used them on a conversion and they sound great.
Very late 50's early 60's sound.

I was interested in your suggestion. The 409S HP-2 "Shorties" feature a painted 409S outer shell, and 409S internal construction. Is this what you used on the conversion?

I have a 2¼" straight pipe with a glasspack on the end, you can have it if you can pick it up. It's a little too loud for me, fatiguing when driving more than 10 mins.
Reason for change - got a NOS MGC exhaust system.
