As some of you know, my wife and I watch lots of films. We don't have cable, so I rent five films a week.

Last night, on the very high recommendation of my friend who owns a local video store, we watched the film "Doubt".

I can't say it was the best film we have seen in the last year, because we watch a very wide range of classic films, etc, but I must say it was the most impressive recently released film I have seen in the last year or two.

I also posted in OTP because the subject matter of the film is very controversial. If anyone here has seen this film or knows the story, and wants to talk about the controversial nature of it, I'm asking that you take it over there please. :D

Highly recommended for anyone who likes well acted and directed drama with much subtlety, no faked over dramatization, and extremely deep and multi-dimensional characters. I plan on seeing this one again sometime to see if it's still as perfect as my first impression, but I'm pretty sure it will be even better next time.

My wife and I saw this film two weeks ago and agree with you Rod - its a very good film and well acted. I had doubt for much of the film, but was doubtless by the end. :)

We dumped our cable TV service a month ago and watch most of our content over the 'net (hulu, youtube, etc.) and have no regrets! We signed up for NetFlix and get the streaming content as well, which has been very good. We just finished the first season of Dexter. What an excellent show (but not for the squeamish!)

We saw the stage version of Doubt during it's run on Broadway. One of the best we've seen. Haven't seen the film version. I don't usually like to see films of plays I've seen because I find the story often gets lost in the director's quest to get the best shot and the more grandiose sets and locations.

One bright note is that (IIRC) the play's writer/director did the screen play for the film and directed it. If you do see the film I'd be interested in how it compares.

Spoiler below, so those who haven't seen it stop here!

Something I read a few days ago that may or may not be true: The director told the priest he was innocent in the play, and guilty in the film (I may have this reversed), but the screenplay dialog and events are supposed to be the same. Point being...how does the actor's demeanor influence our judgement?

Very well acted.

But not a feel good. Left me sleepless and disturbed the night I watched it.

I wonder how I would have felt if I wasn't raised Roman Catholic, and new of many of their issues.

Comment on Spoiler, so if you haven't seen it skip this post.

That's interesting. We came out of the play wondering if he was guilty or innocent and I think that was the point. That's why it's titled "Doubt". It sparked a long discussion concerning his guilt or innocence and we were split on our conclusions.
